I hope all these papers remain open, Local news of interest is sometimes missing from larger papers.

People like to say they are getting their news "online" now and don't have time to read the paper. Look at this "news site", most of the news is coming over the wire and is generated at a local paper.

What's happening to the paper business is the same as what's been happening to the music business, they are getting ripped off and not paid! How can they afford to pay reporters, staff, overhead, etc. when folks are reading the paper for free online and NOT buying subscriptions......how?

They will be missed when they are gone and folks will finally figure out where the real news came from....and it ain't CNN or FOX news!

you're entitled to your opinion and likewise so am I. I enjoy reading the Banner and think they do a great job on a shoestring budget. Furthermore, I think we are lucky to even have a small town paper where they will publish a story about anything going on in town, unlike the Gazette and Observer whose stories have to appeal to a much wider demographic area.

me says you complain too much, lol!

Bard. I do like the line "take a pill and give your kids a pill and go back to sleep everything will be taken care of". You do have a way of turning a phrase. It is reminiscent of Brave New World or 1984 I can't recall which. They referred to "soma" as the drug which kept the population at ease and therefore under control. I do believe it is important to have the newspaper remain a viable option regardless of what people think of their copy. A free and independent press is the cornerstone of keeping the Government and those with influence and access in check. The threat of being exposed is a powerful branch in the tree of liberty, no matter how weak a branch it may currently be. The potential for newspapers to resurrect themselves as the guardians of free speech and purveyors of corruption makes them necessary. An epiphany for them could happen tomorrow, however unlikely the hope remains.

Sorry weezy, the comments did broaden beyond the local to a commentary on the state of reporting in print at large. The banner does offer a venue which I feel is an excellent opportunity for free speech at the local level, "Preestalk". It seems to be unedited as long as the writer remains within limited boundaries. The best thing about presstalk is it may reach an audience that does not participate here.

Press talk is a great forum and their limited moderation exemplifies the differences between free speech, profantiy, & insanity. They do a great job and balancing free speech without offending the general public. Too bad topix can be more like that!
