I am so sorry for your loss. This tragedy should never have happened. There are so many people who let this precious angel down. I truly hope that the Swain County DSS, Great Aunt Powell and Aubrey'smother realize what a senseless, needless tragedy this was and take their share of the responsiblity for their part in this. They should all serve time for it.

What about the father, where is he,who is he,what was he doing. Why was the baby not with him.Chief Hicks and every-body wants to blame every-body for this tragic event that has happened, what about the Dora Reed Center losing the state certification, for none the less--NEGLECT.THATS THE POT CALLING THE KITTLE BLACK.Why does Cherokee not have their own DSS Dept.if they think no one treats the indians fairly. The babies father should be in jail accused for murder and neglect also.

I am not from Cherokee but was so touched by this story. Can anyone tell me what the update on the Aubrey LittleJohn story is? Is anyone in jail over this?

The last I heard was that they could not determine the cause of death. In my opinion DSS does bear some responsibility, but the woman taking care of her should be charged with her death or at the very least abuse/neglect. I never understood why she wasn't charged with anything. Our justice system doesn't always make sense and defiantly isn't fair, but regardless of what can be proven this woman knows how she treated that beautiful little girl. I honestly believe she'll get what is coming to her. Whether she gets in this life or the next, karma and justice will catch up with her.

Thank you for responding to my question. I hate to hear that there is no charges against either. What message does this send to other caretakers and the DSS workers? That they can get by with murder? I really don't know how either sleep at night. I also pity the other children under this woman's care and all the children that this DSS is supposed to be looking out for.

Thanks again.

Message to all people: "Hug your kids and tell them you love them daily. Start when they are little and continue on through life. No one is ever to young or to old to be told that they are loved."
I promise you will NEVER regret it and you will have lived a better life for it.

The bio-mother will never realize. She is in jail for drugs charges and had another child while incarcerated. Who took that baby? I bet DSS didnt take it. The same family prob has the infant. I feel the great aunt Ms. McCoy also should be held responsible as well as Ms. Powell and and her husband. But this is Swain County it has all stopped and nothing will happen.

NO ONE is in jail. The last time I read anything about this sad issue was when the great aunt, Ruth McCoy asked the commissioners to ask the DSS to place 5 DSS employees on leave. She NEVER ask was anyone in her family was going to get charged. All she focused on was blaiming an agency when could have easly had stepped in. The DSS Board placed the director on leave and then dismissed her, but NOT for the baby. One employee, who is very political NEVER was placed on leave. One demoted and two resigned. Tell me this is not political. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Its all been swept under the rug now
Please

Yes the care taker is responsible too; However, if DSS had placed this baby with A loving grandparent then that precious baby wouldn't have been abused. DSS is sooooo concerned with their funding for their dept. and how to make social worker of the year for themselves- that they totally forget what their job is all about : THE CHILD(REN)!!!!! DSS needs to be held responsible for their actions.( take a look at the N.C. disciplinary board, wow! that's just the ones who have been caught.
