Cowee (Kowee) means "mountain lion" in the Muskogean languages of Hitchiti, Taskekee and Koasati. The word has no meaning in Cherokee. We think that the mounds around Franklin were the motherland of both the Kowe'te'(Mountain Lion People) and Koasati's (Children of the Mountainlion People). The Muskogean People developed an advanced agricultural society in Western North Carolina for at least 2000 years before there was a single Cherokee in the North Carolina mountains. The aboriginal people of North Carolina should also be recognized.
