I have a six year old and my family has been visiting the Bryson City area for over 40 years. We have been considering moving to the area, but after watching the newspaper over the last year or so, we have concerns. I am reaching out for comments on living there. Having a child, you look at things differently. Any comments are welcome. We love Bryson City and everyone we have met there.

I suppose the only answer would be to compare it with other towns . I lived in FL for 32 yrs. I was born and raised in bryson city . There has been a lot of crime here lately but compared to where I lived in central FL it's a walk in the park .Drugs are the biggest problem I think !

Thanks for the feed-back! I realize no matter where you go now, there is good and bad. The recent activity has been cause for concern. Thanks again!!

I lived there for several years and was glad to move my son elsewhere. The drugs are rampant and unless your child is only interested in sports there is very little for the kids to do, hense the reason why so many of them get into trouble or get into drinking and drugs. Since moving away my son has greatly improved his grades, found creative outlets for his interests, and is much happier.

So true that there is nothing here for kids but sports ! That is why we moved to Fl . Jobs are hard to find and we have to go out of town to find entertainment ! I don't mind because i'm retired , but for young families I wouldn't advise living here ! What we have here is the train, tubing and craft shops which are seasonal avtivities . No movies no skating rink,no game rooms . We have to drive to Cherokee 10 miles from here to see a movie. The scenery is gorgeus in spring and summer but winters are hard.

Hi Geezer! I am retiring in BC, we have the land and will build in the near future. I was also wondering about the crime but thought it is not much compared to other places. What kind of crime are we talking about in BC? I fell in love with the area, I like it quiet and rural and I do not mind traveling to pick up the things I need. I just found out there is no shelter for unwanted animals, this needs to be worked on, cannot be such a big deal to do. As far as the kids there isnít much in any small town anywhere in the US. It is still the choice they are making.

I have been back over 20 yrs. and no problems. However there are drugs and a lot of related crimes due to that ! according to the local newspaper there are 13 murder suspects housed in our jail . Not sure if they are all from BC because we do house inmates from other counties. If you don't mind driving 10 to 20 miles pick up things you need then I guess BC would be good for you ! I just don't reccomend it for young families but that's just my opinion ! There may be an animal shelter here by the name of PAWS but not sure how they operate.

Yes I read the papers weekly there. But do you fear home invasions? Do you fear being in town at night? I certainly do not mind driving to purchase things, I do that up here in NY. I do not live to be near malls. I wish there was a Costco nearby :( WHy do you say it is hard in the winter you do not get much snow there do you? Cannot be as bad as NY LOL!

Haven't heard of any home invasions but do have concerns about theft.Just lock everything up that you don't want taken! As far as town at night, no I wouldn't be afraid because the PD suspects everyone that walks the street after dark are suspicious and usually stop and question them. You probably won't mind the winters here after living in NY,I just don't like cold weather and having to stay inside most of the winter.I like the snow I just Don't like driving in it and when I can't get out of my steep driveway . Don't know of a cosco.Usually shop at walmart in sylva and lowes builders. You know what we have in BC.

What does your comment mean ? What are they doing other than bringing more money into the county !We cater to the tourists to help the economy in our county but when they want to move here and contribute you are against it . Do you have any idea how many have had to leave here to earn a living for their families ? I was one of them . Lived in FL many years until I was able to retire and there are a lot of others that have had to do the same . I shop locally as much as possible not that my small purchases make a huge difference but it does go to our local merchants and several of them moved here from another state.Does that stop you from buying from them?

Timmy my roots are the South, and I have lived in many places, I prefer nature to bustling cities. I am nice, work hard, drink beer and love animals.

Geezer how often do you get snow and what is the lowest temperature you have seen? I will be building on a ridge top 3000 ft up.

Building their ugly houses on the sides of mountains, putting up posted signs, naming their driveways stupid names, constantly complaining about most things, saying everything is better in florida or whatever rust belt state they came from, being rude to people, stopping in the middle of the road and taking pictures, making land unaffordable for working class people.

Most of our snow is in feb or early march. We don't get as much as years past.usually from 3 to 5 in.The problem is when it freezes . I am about the same height you will be and have 4 wheel drive but find it hard at times not to slide down my steep rd. Just need to prepare for it and stay home . The lowest temp I can remember was 5 degrees but haven't seen it that low in years.

Thanks for replying ! You know you can find rude people anywhere.I worked in BC several yrs.when I came back after retiring and beleive me there are plenty of rude locals and plenty complaining .I haven't noticed any of the houses being ugly. What I consider an ugly home is one with trash piled in the yards and on porches.Just my viewpoint! My driveway has a name and posted signs also and I was born and raised here. The reason land is unaffordable is because the locals don't care who buys their land as long as they pay the price.Well I seem to fit some of your complaint but I don't stop in the road to take pictures.LOL

my home will be beautiful and blend with nature, you will not even see it. Can't help you with the stupid names but gee that really does not affect you that much does it? Wow there are really that many rude people? You certainly sound rude in your discriptions below. Life is short, lighten up, make friends and be kind to animals. God Bless :)

Have many of the same concerns. Lived in the rust belt then 25 years in Florida. Some say we lost our way back home. Found many wonderful people along the way. Mostly, one on one. When in a group, people often tend to stay in said group.
Timmy, unfortunately, belongs to a group who lives in fear. Fear of change. Never having the opportunity to experience other cultures.
These are not bad people; just lack experience which is the tapestry of the human experience.
God bless
