I truly hope that Anita Vistal will emerge from this safe and alive. But what I would like to know
is "why did she do this?" She has a family, children, an extended family and she had (past tense) a job!

The license plate # has been in many of the articles, posted lots of time in the comments, and is still on the America's Most Wanted site.

NO other escapes from the new jail. The guy that escaped, while being processed, was in Police custody, at the court house,

There is more information in an extensive article in The Smoky Mountain News:http://www.smokymountainn ews.com/issues/04_09/04_01_09/ fr_jail_break.html

The ACT reporters should read that article. That is an example of real reporting and a developed article.

If the head lawman knew of the situation, fire his lazy ask. Pull his credentials until investigation is over or suspend him with out pay.

You are absolutely correct! That is a well written and informative article. The AC-T COULD take some lessons from that. Thanks for sending the link!

Thanks. This is the most informative article, I have read, concerning the escape. It sounds like the fired "Osborne" is trying to cover for his incompetence also.

I do hope that everyone looks at who is really responsible. People are very quick to point fingers and blame people at the new jail. Well, I must ask the former jailer...if you knew she was involved with him and had even went to your boss about it...why in the world would you leave her in charge while you took your break?? There is always more to the story and I hope that all of you who are so quick to blame will realize that she and miles are responsible. Yes I am sure that looking back there were things that should have been done differently and hopefully no one will be hurt or killed by mistakes made, however, the people working there did not want this to happen nor did they think they should mistrust one of their co workers. People say things all the time about their co workers but you dont always believe them especially if they are questionable in their actions as well. So take a step back and wait for the rest of the story.

That just goes to show that you can have all that hi-tech stuff you want, but in the end, it's humans who do the work (or not).

So true. Anyone on the county payroll who turns whistle blower is gonna be fired. Especially if the sheriff thought this guy might let some dirty secrets out. Appears he did but not until after he was fired. It appears all the other jailers tried to talk over their concerns with their supervisors and were probably told not to worry about it or leave it to them. From what I've heard and seen it is not possible to disagree with Sheriff Cochran without him getting defensive or just plain mad.

So this guy went ahead and took his break. Many government agencies require employees to take their breaks in order to be in compliance with the labor board. Some get written up if they don't take the breaks. In this case it seems that another person had to replace Vestal before his 15 minutes were up so that is another place to go for more answers. Maybe the SBI can get to the bottom of it and straighten this and alot of other matters up before the county gets sued off the map. There are a lot of good personal in Swain County law enforcement but they have to have good leadership in order to do the job right.

It would appear this ole boy is a "ONE TIME SHERIFF", that is, if he is not impeached first.

Is it just me, or has this story changed?

Wasn't we just told earlier this week that the control room was left unmanned when Mrs. Vestal asked the jailer manning the cameras to help her move a heavy piece of equipment?

I'm willing to bet they don't have a clue!

My 14 year old said something today that caught my attention: he said perhaps Mr. Miles doesn't have any use for Mrs. Vestal anymore, but that doesn't necessarily means he has killed her. He said perhaps Mr. Miles has let her go, but if he did, where is she to go? He said she knows she is a wanted woman, so returning home probably isn't in her best interest. I have to agree with him. I've never thought he has killed her. Maybe I just chose to remain positive for the sake of her children.

I've said all along I thought based upon her MySpace page that she loved her children and was proud of them. Today I talked to her oldest daughters former teacher who said Mrs. Vestal was a very involved parent. I was told she never missed anything at school, that she was always there helping out and volunteering cheerful with a smile.
