Interesting comment by the federal agent. Seems like the real fraud is the obscene taxation by the government.

I agree with ham sandwich... how about focusing on meth labs and taking down people who are importing heroin and other really dangerous drugs from other countries?

This guy faces the very serious charge of possession of a firearm by a conviction felon. Let's not make him some kind of folk hero.

“The illegal moonshine business is fraud on taxpayers in Tennessee and across the country,” he said.

Fraud on the taxpayers my azz, more like the revenuers after their $$$$$. He hasn't cost me or you a dime right up until they put him in jail. Now we get to pay to feed, house, clothe, and provide medical care for him. sounds like the feds are defrauding the taxpayers.

I've got to agree with you there. I wish the feds/LEO would focus on more important things and leave moonshiners alone. Big hairy deal!!!

It said leads to other crimes? Like what...drinking? Hello!!! doesn't the government sell liquor? In the hills people swear of the medicinal purpose of white liqor...not just for drinking. And don't tell me its not medicinal. Look at cough syrups....look at gerital.

he isn't out trying to get one over on the government. he is an older mountain man who lives by the old ways. So the government says.. sorry we don't get anything off it... lets lock him up for disobeying us int he free country.

And no I do not drink. But I can remember many times Mama mixing me up cough syrup.. Homestyle with whiskey ..lemon and honey. I never got sick then.

I guess then we cut doctors out too though

Moonshine is romanticized in folklore and the movies. The truth though is that moonshine is a dangerous health issue and breeds other crime,” ATF Special Agent James Cavanaugh said in a statement.

“The illegal moonshine business is fraud on taxpayers in Tennessee and across the country,” he said.

The hell you say!!! Bush with his war (9 billion dollars a day) in Iraq is a fraud on taxpayers, not moonshine. I have drank a lot of moonshine, both good and bad and would rather have "shine" anytime over the legal stuff. Let popcorn go and go after the illegals in this country that defraud the government more than hundreds of shiners do.

I tried Moonshine many years ago, hence, another reason I don't drink very much if at all. A Glass of sweet wine from time to time. That moonshine(once I stopped spitting fire) well, the rest is kinda fuzzy lol

To those of us who grew up in Haywood County, Popcorn IS and ALWAYS WILL BE a folk hero. He is one of the last remaining relics of a by-gone era. He lives his life just the way many of our grandparents and great-grandparents did, and I find no fault in that.

What we do NOT need to do is lump him in with some of the other people who face the charge of possession of a firearm by a felon. He's a mountain man, not a violent felon. Best I know by reading about the man my entire life, his felonies involve only making liquor, nothing violent. He isn't some gang-banger or crack dealer, just an old-fashioned mountain man practicing his trade. The only crime in what he's doing is that the feds aren't making as much tax revenue off the man as they should. His arrest has nothing to do with anything apart from the government being greedy. Obviously his product isn't a health hazard...he wouldn't have been in "business" all his life if he didn't turn out a quality product.

For those of us who are proud to have grown up in the hills of Appalachia, Popcorn was simply one of us. If some of you folks do not like our heritage, then keep your mouths shut.

My grandaddy made moonshine till he was too old to get to the still. He raised a family of 8 during the depression on the money he made making moonshine. His white lightning was of such a quality that the local sheriff got his supply from my grandad and would send a deputy out to tell grandaddy to lay low when the feds were in the area. I see nothing wrong with making a quality drink.

OK, as usual everyone writes, oh let him go, dont law enforcement have anything better to do, etc etc. It's the same ole crap every week. If you dont like the law then make a change at the ballot box. Write your state representatives, make petitions, just do something other than complain about law enforcement. The bottom line is it is against the law, and law enforcement has the responsibilty to enforce those laws until they are changed. So work on changing them if you dont like them. Until then, HE BROKE THE LAW AND WAS ARRESTED. THE END.

Maybe if they had worried about the thugs that were in violation of probation and in possession of a fire arm in Chapel Hill last week then Eve Carson would still be alive. The probation system and the court system certainly has something to be desired. Their worries is with the small town people that just want to make a living, the thugs that actually kill are too much trouble to go after so they focus their attention on what is easy. No body is making him a hero, he is just a man trying to make a living and actually the only way he knows how. Beats the heck out of robbing and shooting a innocent person in the head, ya think??

Read the charge again. He is not just anyone with a gun in their vehicle. He is a convicted felon carrying a gun which is a serious federal offense.
