I absolutely agree the General Assembly has stuck hit's head in the sand on funding roadways (not to mention guaranteeing DOT is spending it's money most efficiently).
Contrary to SC DOT's Buck Limehouse's recent statements as fact, I do not agree toll ways are in the best interest of the public.
Several Government Accounting Office investigative reports raise similar questions.(GAO-08-1052T of 24 July;GAO-08-44 of 20 February; GAO-08-198 of January 2008 available 800-424-5454)
A toll is nothing other than a tax that elected politicians don't have to answer for. I simply cannot understand how it is more economical efficient and cheaper to have our tax dollars pay to seize land under eminent domain to turn over to private individuals whose expenses are covered by taxpayers, excuse me toll payers. Those expenses include cost of millions of dollars borrowed; costs of toll booths, booth workers; workers who watch booth workers; big equipment; tax payments made to federal and state politicians for toll income; more taxpayer funding of accelerated depreciation of what was government owned equipment AND "reasonable" return on investment (profit). All that translates into toll rates that move with the winds, something we have no say about for 75-99 years if experiences elsewhere are heeded.

Do we really need people from Detriot here? Isn't
that the murder capitol of USA. Just take quick
look at what's going on with the mayor there.
I visited the 30yrs and never went back because,
it's crime ridden.
