Jaytec moving jobs to Chelsea after buying manufacturing building

Dec 10, 2009 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Ann Arbor.com

The owners of a Lenawee County steel tube mill bought a 190,000-square-foot bulding in Chelsea this fall, part of plans to move its fabrication functions and up to 100 jobs to the city.

This is not the place you want to work! They are only accepting applications through Kelly Services. They will keep you as a temporary employee for 6 months before they will consider hiring you and even then - they will keep you on 'probation' for another 90 days. The pay is only $9.00 per hour - no benefits OR commitments for full time permanent employment. IF you get hurt or injured during your temporary status - they will not keep you. IF they decide to keep you - you will make a whopping $9.50 per hour. Pass this place up. Go to www.jobvent.com ad look up L&W Engineering - Jaytec is a subsidary of L&W - all of the complaints are TRUE!

I think it depends on what position you are applying for. I took a position in the material handling/shipping/receiving dept and am making considerably more than 9.50 an hour. I would be interested in how and where you got your information because all of the searching that I have done have not brought up any complaints.

You must have been hired directly by Jaytech. Most of the people coming in are being hired thru Kelly Services. I know one person who was let go after she got chemical burns. They were using a chloride cleaner on galvanized pipes - causes toxic fumes. She told her supervisor the shit was being used wrong and it was dangerous and he told her she had to keep using it or leave. I guess Kelly sent her to the clinic they have and Jaytech wouldn't even send the MSDS sheet to them. Last time I talked to her she said she was let go because she made some suggestions. When she said they asked the people to do that they changed the reason to her supervisor said she had a fight with him. Not true. I always saw her and Bill and they got along good. I think she was too smart to work there. She knew more shit than most of the other people. Heard she filed a complaint against JT with MIOSHA because they told Kelly they wouldn't use that cleaner improperly any more and she went back into work and they were still using it without the right protective clothing or goggles and using it on the galvanized pipes again too.

I'm not going to stay working there. They lie about shit and so does Kelly. But it's a check for now.

10 hrs a day you would work it one day and they would say come in for 8 hrs the rest of the week. They can make you do anything they want and treat you like dirt and thereís nothing you can do or say about it. The day I did, I got FIRED...
Bill, there so-called Boss, coordinator, wannabe God is ragging on me and my partner about the machine we were running, which we had no control over all morning because the robots were breaking down and sensors werenít working. We had run 1600 parts by 10am which most people donít run by 11:30am and we had almost 2 hrs of down time which we had no control over either. Bill comes and tells us to tear the machine down and throw all the parts I just had stacked up for the past 2 hrs worth of work. So I dumped both sides of parts I had stacked into the hoppers and was getting ready to change over. He comes back and says never mind just go back to running the same job. Ok, so now I have to put everything back that I had just thrown into the hoppers and re-sort 2 more hrs of work I had just stacked, this was the 3rd time in 2 weeks he had done this to us. I turned and said this is Bullshit and started walking back to my machine, he runs up behind me and says donít you dare turn your back and walk away from me. Well needless to say, I had had enough of his BULLSHIT and I turned to him and said FK YOU. His jaw dropped and he looked at another wannabe GOD, coordinator, and said did you hear what he said to me? I said well if you didnít it was FK YOU!! Then they proceed to have me leave the building. As I do Bills response to him was, hurry up and get someone else over here to run this machine now. They give you 2 ....15 minutes breaks all day even if you work 10 hrs...you go in at 4am get a break at 8:30, 4 1/2 hrs later, then you get a second one at 11:30 the bathrooms are a 4 minute walk back and forth even if you donít use them, the break room is 5 minutes away and then they ring a bell 2 minutes before break is over to get you back to your machines so you get a SOLID 8 minute break to do everything you have to do. 2 times a day, so for 10 hrs you get to stand all but for a whopping 16 minutes. 9 minutes you spend of that 16 getting where you need to be, be it the bathroom or break room. No lunch period either so if you are hungry during your 10 hour shift, you need to stuff your lunch down your throat in between taking a leak and running back to your machine.
Thereís no training, thereís no safety, they fired 1 guy which had no training, for sticking his arm in something they should have had a guard on, he didnít know any better, but heís gone also. If you want a paycheck and thatís all go for itÖ If you want a place that gives a shit about you (AVOID) this place at all costs, they want you to run 1000's of pieces per shift everyday and could give 2 shits less if you have sore feet, hands, back etc... as soon as your wore out, they will replace you with someone else. Beware of bill he is a two-faced back stabber!!

I took a job a Jaytech the 19th of November 2009, as a (Machine Operator) not as a janitor or machine cleaner. Well I cleaned machines for approx. 1 month and swept floors. They sent me to their Britton plant for 1 week to train. I went back to the Chelsea plant and (NEVER) ran the machine they trained me on. I was there everyday 15 minutes before shift started, worked my ass off everyday and was treated like dirt. I give all kinds of suggestions to make the job easier which no one cared at all. I had 3 months in and was working 10 hrs a day and Saturdays for 5 weeks straight. They would come tell you 2 hrs prior to shift ending you would work Saturday, and they would tell you there working 10 hrs a day you would work it one day and they would say come in for 8 hrs the rest of the week. They can make you do anything they want and treat you like dirt and thereís nothing you can do or say about it. The day I did, I got FIRED...

You don't know what your talking about. Bill made it 12 years at plant one before coming to jaytec. You can't get made at bill for expecting you to work as hard as the older women that work there. Good luck at Mc Donalds!

This is probably the funniest story yet. You got fired because your coordinator had the nerve to ask you to run parts after you had put them away for a change over. They paid you to get them out, they paid you to put them away, what difference does it make to you? The story about your buddy putting his hand in the machine is pretty good too. Because of people like you, they have to put warning labels on irons telling you to remove your shirt before ironing it.
Keep us posted on your upcoming job search. I'm sure you'll land a better job real soon. Don't take crap from anyone!

JayTech employee: Bet ya didn't know Bill got sent to the Chelsea plant because they wanted him out of the Belleville plant... They couldn't stand him there.

When MIOSHA comes to visit you won't be singing the praises of Jaytech - Oh and that Honda contract that's so important to them... It's going to be gone too. When a company purposely misleads them and lies about the 'quality' of the parts they are maunfacturing it doesn't bode well for the future of their contract. Especially right now. Honda has been made aware of the quality issues and the fact that both the Belleville plant and now the Chelsea plant have played QC games with them.

Good luck with your job - I work elsewhere now. I have medical, dental and optical plus I'm making $10 more per hour than I was being paid where you work. Gotta tell ya - 20+ an hour with 1/2 hour lunch and a 15 minute break is great. Plus I get time and a half for any hours over my 40 regular.

Starting a new facility from the ground up takes hard work and patience, I know, I've seen many changes take place in the short time I have been employed here. The hours are long and sometimes the notification of overtime is short, but it beats the dogshit out of Marvin...right? Bitching about the fact you had a job during this phase of the economy shows anyone who is on the outside looking in that you should be glad your Mom and Dad are allowing you to sleep in your old room again. I for one am glad you made the decision to tell Bill to "F" off...He didn't need you around anyway. He's a good man and deserves much respect, as do the rest of us who put so much effort into creating a safe and productive enviroment we can all be proud to be a part of.

OMG! This is too funny! This is probably Bill responding! Sorry - nothing you can say here will make anyone believe differently.

BTW Bill - maybe you should ask your wife to teach you to spell once she gets her degree for SE. E-N-V-I-R-O-N-M-E-N-T.

Jaytech is technically not a 'ground up' company, they moved various 'jobs' from several different plants to one plant. A new building does not make it a new company. You don't seem to know very much for someone who claims to 'know' so much.

Wow, you really sound like a smart guy! With your spelling skills, knowledge of OSHA standards and Honda quality standards I can't believe that you even accepted a job at Jaytec.
I can understand why your so upset with bill. I couldn't imagine coming home and telling my family that i was fired for acting like a five year old. It must have been pretty tough for you.
You seem to know a lot about Bill. He is something you may not know. Bill doesn't live in or around Ann Arbor, so it probably wasn't him that posted that.

jay-TecEmployee: I don't live in Ann Arbor either but that's where my server is routed through. Guess you don't know much about computers either... I'd explain how they work but somehow I think it'd be like trying to explain quantum physics to an idiot. Well - explaining anything to you would be explaining it to an idiot. Go back to school and take a few more welding courses. Obviously you couldn't major in something that requires intellect.

As for why I worked there and why I quit - the place is a mess, I could not work in a place like that. Call it pride, call it personal standards... That place was beneath me. I'm now in a job that treats it's employees with respect and dignity. A place that's clean and well run, where they do take pride in the quality of the products that they manufacture. I am part of the APQP Department. You probably don't even know what that is... Not surprising, quality makes no difference for any of the L&W plants or subsidiaries.

Instead of coming here and pretending that JayTech is such a wonderful place to be - why not focus on the people that work at JayTech? Start treating them better, training them better and things would probably improve. It's unfortunate that your plant had to bring in used machines that were substandard and neglected. That is not the fault of the employees, that is the fault of the company and the inability to comprehend that preventative maintenance is vital to overall quality and the ability of workers to produce parts.

I wonder what will happen when the union decides to visit the workers at your plant? Personally I have no love for unions - but they do have their benefit when workers are being taken advantage of by an employer. Some employees just need more protection than others. The employees at JayTech seem to need it.

If the Chelsea Plant is as bad as the Belleville Plant then its probably worse than they say. They did get Bill out of that place because they couldn't stand him. Rob went there too but he was a good guy and large marge Rodney and Abdul were glad to see her go! I met some of the people who went to Chelsea when they was training and there was only 2 of them that were good workers a guy and a lady on the welders. The other lady always smelled like she was drunk in the morning. I quit when I got a better job because they would just tell you you had to work overtime and they didn't give you an option. The pay wasn't that good either. Most of the people who work there that aren't in charge are nice people though. The management sucks and they are always changing them or firing them. If you can find another job you should take it but working there is better than no job at all.

I guess someone who works in management at Jaytec would call someone that doesn't agree with them a troll. People who do that are people who can defend their own opinions. They have to try to call other people names or say something about them instead of replying with real information. I have applications in everywhere and as soon as I get a different job I'm gone!

I got fired because my coordinator wasn't smart enough to do his own job, let alone telling other people what to do. I did my job very well for the (5)minutes training i received in that shitHOLE!! 2nd, of all that guy wasn't my buddy, pencil dick. 3rd it wasn't me that stuck my hand in the machine...so go stick a iron on your face, press firmly, it might do it some good...ohh make sure the iron is on HIGH. And i don't have to explain to anyone why i was fired. I did what i did because i had the BALLS to stand up for what i believe in. Unlike you MR Chickenshit. So next time you open your trap make sure you swallow the shit before you spew it out ok, Pal? Also to ALL you (PROUD)..JAYTECH wannabe employees....tell me this 10 years from now when this SHITHOLE is non-existent. They have more safety violations then OSHA allows in 20 shops. Theres no safety, no training, no gloves, sleeves, rags, for crying out loud. When I 1st started there i had to go to the hardware store in Chelsea and buy a cheap putty knife with my own money just to scrap the crap off JAYTECHS machines. They could care less about each and everyone of you, now that the place is up and running. Oh and when you come to Mickey D's for a job when Jaytech closes, don't forget to give me BILLS name for a reference. I'll make sure your hired.....LMAO

I am currently emplyoed there through Kelly Services. After working there for a few months I have come to realize that Jaytec as a business is doing what they should be doing. The company that occupied the factory before Jaytec went under and from what I understand from a former employee is that there was not a worker that made less than $20 per hour. None of the positions there require any intelligence beyond high school so why is everyone expecting a college degree salary?$9.00 an hour is what most should expect and most factory based positions start at. And if you find better, then great, you likely just got lucky. There are however a few things that I disagree with. I don't understand the reasoning behind withholding 5% of associates' wages. Sure it bought a new factory ($1.5 million), new robots to replace positions, and even a Hummer H2 for the owners son ($50,000+) who at the time wasn't old enough to drive it. Seems like in these rough times it would be easier to buy something a little more economical. Maybe a Honda, since we make parts for them.
Also, I have heard of a few associates that haven't gotten a raise since they have been here (some with over 3 years of employment). There are not any earnings statements viewable to associates so they could be banking without rewarding production workers.
As far as this goes Jaytec is a great place for temporary employment. If you're expecting to make a bunch of money a live comfortably go get an education.
