So, last month, I got the latest repricing list from Comcast. The price of my cable service went up less than $1; and even though the price list portion of the bill said that my internet service would be going up $3, it said elsewhere on the bill that the internet price would remain the same. OK, I thought, I can live with that. They are being reasonable for a change.

But when I received my bill this month, the bottom line went up more than what I expected. The cable and the internet charges were what I expected; but what I found was that I was being charged for the two little black boxes (DTA's) that I was forced to add by Comcast when the analog to digital conversion happened a few years back.

I never asked for or wanted these boxes but was forced to take them. I have to pay for the electricity to run these boxes. And, at the time, it seemed to be indicated that these boxes would be "free".

So I researched the price list more and there was a notification on it that this charge for these boxes would be implemented; but you really had to look for it. I think that when Comcast makes a major change like this, they have an obligation to make it clearer than that.

I've done some further research and found that Comcast is doing this across the country and it has been very difficult for most people to get Comcast to do anything about the new charges. That was definitely my experience too when I called.

I've also found some postings that indicate the boxes may not even be necessary as some peope have been able to get a least a portion of the channels by running the cable wire directly into an HDTV. And at least one person claims that you could get even more of the channels if Comcast had done something differently on their end. Also there is a class action law suit (doesn't include anyone from Mass though specifically though) against Comcast for requiring any cable boxes.

I realize that if Comcast hadn't started charging for these boxes, they just would have raised some other fee. But I think what and how they have done this instead is very deceitful. God, I wish we had another real cable choice in ths city.

Same thing happened to me last month. I had 2 boxes for free, then comcast decided every tv in your house had to have one. I didn't need too more, I was just fine with having the basic channels in 2 of my rooms. They forced me to buy them, now they told me the rates went up on those black boxes, now I have to pay for 4 and like you I never wanted them in the first place!

I can't agree with the two posters more !!! I had gone to Comcast's office maybe five months ago to see how I could lower my bill. I don't want these Spanish-speaking stations, they are no good to me...I speak English !!!!! Their reply: Sorry they're in the bundle !!! But why can't I pick some other stations and get rid of these foreign language speaking stations???? Sorry, you have to take the bundle !!!!! We need cable as w/o it our reception is very bad....But they have no competition, that's the problem.....I see all those sattelite dishes and perhaps that bears looking into - but I've heard they don't have good reception with bad weather....It isn't just the monthly fee you have to look at. Multiply your monthly fee x 12 and see what we're paying per year to this cable company. Anyone know when their contract ends ??? Any other suggestions to bypass cable ????

Hanlon signed a 10 year contract when he became Mayor. So two more years after this one.

But we've been told in the past that the contract is not exclusive. It's just that no one else wants to spend the money on the infrastructure that would be necessary to come here. Can you blame them?

I asked if FIOS would be coming to Everett and Verizon told me they have no plans to ever come here. He said it would cost too much money for them to run their fiberoptics. Guess it's Comcast or an ugly dish for us.

Get rid of all your cable companies, because if you have tv without cable and use an antenna, you can get a lot of channels to watch, and every year there are more channels added and its all for FREE.

IDIOTS: We are not idiots - in fact, I'd say 'we' are pretty astute as a group and don't like being taken advantage of ... This is price gouging plain and simple !!!!

We also don't like being taken at the gas pumps either...perhaps you don't mind but the majority of Americans are pretty dam smart...

This morning I spoke with an office aide to Maria Sachs, Florida state senator. I am trying to get Senator Sachs to hold investigations and public hearings into the shady and incompetent practices of Comcast and other utility companies. If she cannot or will not do it, I will keep going to other lawmakers until someone takes up the matter.

These bastards at Comcast and other utility companies need to be dragged before public hearings. Moreover, fines for violation are a joke. They will just pass on the cost to the consumer. If evidence of dishonest billing is found, new laws must impose PRISON TERMS for executives.

Some points on the Spanish channels,

1) The Spanish folks that live here in Everett, by and large, don't even subscribe to Comcast.
Because:
a)In Hispanic countries, a big old honking satellite dish hanging off the side of the house is a STATUS SYMBOL!
Yep, in Brazil, and other Latino countries, having a dish is a sign that you are well to do
and b) You can get actual Brazilian, Colombian, etc TV stations right here in Everett through the wonders of satellite technology,
but NOT through cable TV.

2)That leaves the VAST MAJORITY of Cable user's paying for Spanish stations that they do not even use.

3rd point)
What ever happened to the alternate sound track SAP button?
This is the little button TV remotes all had for a short time, so an alternative SPANISH soundtrack would play on otherwise English TV shows.

If they are going to FORCE English speaking customers to PAY for Spanish channels,
why not have the decency to incorporate alternative ENGLISH SOUND TRACKS
for the paying customers?

Because there is no law, or group forcing them to cater to English speaking people.
That would be racist I guess.

Hey IDIOT, First of all, does my pay go up every year no and secondly, I am talking about Basic Cable, thats all I can afford, maybe you have money to throw away but most of us would rather spend our hard earned money on anything else but the cable/utility bill, oh and by the way I'm not old or cheap.. Jerk!

I love Comcast. On demand and all the star channels they have worth every cent to me. I'd never switch. Fios doesn't have nearly what Comcast has and the Internet service is MUCH faster than Verizon.

You are so wrong. FIOS cannot be beat with their tv and super fast internet. BTW, they also have on demand. Comcast is the absolute worst.

what i don't like, in my situation with Direct TV we must RENT the boxes for 6 bucks a month..FOREVER. Now how is this legal..the boxes are paid for in a year-16 months yet ive been paying this six bucks a month fee for 8 years now...WTF kind of BS is that? I could have bought 10 boxes myself! Get this..i went and paid for a box outright at best buy and i still have to pay the "rental" fee for that box!! legal stealing i say! I wonder if this is the same deal going on with comcast boxes? Does the "rental" fee ever go away???
