I agree that this has only become a national issue because it is such an extreme and unusual policy. This policy is not even uniform within Chelmsford and is unique to Byam. It is amazing that Yeoman supports Gilmore on this issue instead of being a leader and resolving this. His failures to address this has lead to the media circus. I also agree that his performance at the SC meeting where he attacked the parents was a disgrace. The parents are correct, that should have been an opportunity for all to have an open and frank discussion about the issue. Instead, Gilmore doesn't show, Yeoman attacks the "two critics" and the SC is more concerned about whether the parents "spoke to the media" and doesn't take a position. The SC should hold Yeoman accountable for this but instead says the Byam PTO makes the rules. Where is the leadership?

This is exactly the issue. The town under the leaderhip of the SC must ensure that all voices are heard with respect and dignity. The SC meeting was a sad day for Chelmsford. Interesting that my now 30 year old and 27 year old children went to Byam and we still put ornaments that they purchased from the gift room on the tree. Sorry, but that is less than three decades ago. Let's get the facts straight.

How do these two define "attacked"? They are all over the radio and tv allowing the interviewers to call people anti-christian, they are promissing to keep the pressure on, they are the ones who put the school in the public eye and kids are coming home telling their parents that "people are peeking in their classromm windows" and they are the ones who walked out of the PTO meeting at the end of October shouting "Jesus died on the cross 2000 years ago for me". They have a very warped sense of self. They should drive around town and look at all the christian churches with "Holiday Fair" signs in front - take their crusade to the churches not the public schools.

I agree with this post...they have a right wing alliance helping them it is not about exposing ALL types of religion into the gift room it is about CHRISTMAS in the gift room.....that is not offering diversity....enroll in a Cathlic enviroment if that is what you want...this whole thing has been an embarrassment and more so a HUGE distraction at the school....I was at the meeting the other night and counted at least three uniformed Police Officers inside the auditorium(not to mention the police persence outside)....does that make sense to anyone....stop wining about the holiday shop and lets all try to get along....these ladies should take a look at what they created and if they don't like being "attacked" they should have said NO COMMENT to the media outlets that called them instead of dying to get infront of the camera and on the radio.

Not for nothing, but my child went to school this morning still looking forward to the Gift Room. She knows there was controversy, but she also knows its not her problem. Hopefully, we'll have no more well meaning adults trying to enlighten us on either side. I don't agree with Dr. Gilmore on this, but she stood her ground, and the committee backed her up. The school department is beyond hope, especially Dr. Yeoman. I wish I had the knowledge, money, time and patience to run for this committee, or even volunteer more, but I know my limitations. Let's move on, see if things work differently next year. We have bigger economic problems coming our way.

OK let me understand this? Your a catholic but think Jesus allows religious diversity? lol.. Ever hear of the commandment "you shall have no other Gods before me"? The right wings are only telling you what your ears know are the truth, but you do not want to hear the truth, because it BITES your soul to the core.

Why should these women keep quiet? They went to the 'proper authorities' and were dismissed. This is still America & people have every right to voice their opinions - even if you disagree. Again, the media would not have followed this story if Gilmore & yoeman explained their policy - but Gilmore blew them off & yoeman was practically incoherent in his feeble response. The cop show was yoemans & sc idea - the ultimate distraction. Yoeman did attack these women & he was wrong & should apoligize. Of course he won't because he is beyond hope.

I'm another "Chelmsford dad"

The cops were there because Principal Gimore and Superintendent Yeoman received threats from " Christians".

The 'mothers" were heard and lost their argument. They did not get their way. Different from being dismissed. I guess it's " dismissed" when you don't win. The PTO met and decided on this policy. The mothers just don't like it, and decided to grandstand.

Calling in the National Defense Alliance, and appearing on FOX News, were both pathetic moves.

You know what's behind this: bringing Christianity ( not religion, but Christianity) into the schools. That's what NDA is ALLLLL about.
Alliance Defense Fund

Windsor, CT

#12 Dec 1, 2009
The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) is a conservative Christian nonprofit organization with the stated goal of "defending the right to hear and speak the Truth through strategy, training, funding, and litigation."

ADF was launched in 1994 by Bill Bright (founder, Campus Crusade for Christ), Larry Burkett (founder, Crown Financial Ministries), James Dobson ( Focus on the Family), D. James Kennedy (founder, Coral Ridge Ministries), Marlin Maddoux ( International Christian Media), along with the leadership of over thirty other conservative Christian organizations.

ADF supports the inclusion of invocations at public meetings and the use of religious displays (such as crosses and other religious monuments) on public lands and in public buildings.

So there you have it.

They received threats from Christians? What do you base your evidence on? Did they say "Hello I am a Christian and I am threatening you"? How do you know it was not a Muslim? they believe Jesus was a prophet and revere him just as much a Mohammad, or maybe even a Messianic Jew who believes Jesus is the Messiah? Also those mothers were treated with total disrespect, it was something that would make anybody with morals vomit, but you being a socialist / communist /atheist scum bag would not know this, see I can ASSUME too.

The ADF and the PTO are both separate non-profit organizations.

So maybe we can attend a meeting of the ADF and tell them what to do , and when we don't get our way , call it being " dismissed", then go to the ACLU and CNN, asked to be heard at their next publically held meeting and call the press i. when we are threatened by the good christian people that know what's best for us" who call our houses, we can call in the cops.

The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) is religious fanaticism to an extreme. These People believe your beliefs must mirror theirs or you are Unfit. Ask the leaders what they think of the murder of David Gunn or George Tiller ? If you support people like these, you have bigger problems than of you can put Santa in a school store

Wow, when the Christian nuts and loonies from the ADF say they won't sue, you have to stop and think that there are really no grounds for a suit, otherwise these media-whooooors would be all over it.

DaddyO - the pto decides nothing at Byam - it is Jane's way - or no way. Fox news, the NDA, Lowell Sun, ch. 4,5,7,etc do not come into a Town because two families disagree with a school policy. They came to Chelmsford because 1 school out of 7 has banned all holiday/traditional/religious items from a holiday gift room held in December during school time on school property and the person responsible for the ban will not explain WHY. Gilmore and yoeman are used to telling parents to shut up & go away - it just doesn't work that way with the press and they could not handle it. The cop show was just yoemans way to try to deflect attention away from his miserable performance. Why would anyone ever take what yoeman says seriously - he answers to no one - just ask the school committee.

I love how you write "lets all try to get along" and then follow it up with some more crap blaming the two mothers/critics." I can see how hard you are willing to "try to get along." That's funny.
