Public-safety, cost concerns as Chelmsford fire station heads to a vote

Apr 2, 2011 Full story: Lowell Sun

It's round two at Tuesday's polls for a new fire-station headquarters. After a $12 million proposal failed in 2009, a cheaper, smaller plan is back on the table for $9 million.

It is interesting to know that the fire, police and water departments were created in the middle of the 1930's, right in the middle of a depression far greater than anything happening currently. The citizens took on the job of contacting the state and federal governments to obtain municipal bonds to establish and build these departments. It might be interesting to note that most of those citizens taking on the task of establishing vital town services were not electees of the town, but simply residents of the town, who recognized how essentials these departments were to the towns well-being. They were able to understand that the bonds provided were a long time investment.

If there were a way to get them here now. Challenge any of the sycophantic town suck ups to go down into the basement and look around. There is a reason that they are asking to get another station, and it isn't for simple amenity upgrades.

The condition of the firehouse isn't the issue. It is the size and cost of the project. We already have one small station that doesn't have funding to remain open, under-serving a significant portion of the Town. Why we need such a large (more expensive to operate) station is the question. And, why it costs so much relative to construction norms in our area is another. If someone can explain the need for such a large station (which will still have 2,000sqft unfinished) and how it will affect the operational budget for the other small stations, perhaps folks will get behind the project. Explain why two dirt fields need a $1M replacement, too.

The current station is horrid and should be replaced. But if we need the old mini-van replaced, do we replace it with an RV? I'm fine with funding a new station that allows the 5-station model to exist.
