I just read someone's post about getting picked up at Zayres in Lowell. We too were picked up there. I loved going although I remember writing my mom letters about missing her. I remember gimp and swimming. Reading these posts was like going through a time machine - great memories.

Remember when the bad kids use to get paddled at night? They really put the fear of God in you.
Yikes!!!!!!!!!

I only got to go for one week every summer because that's all my parents could afford. Loved it! Always tried to find an excuse not to have to swim, loved arts and crafts:)

I LOVED camp! Uncle George with his dog Trixie., digging for worms, movie night, kick ball, archery, field day, gimp necklaces, bonfires, Zayre's parking lot. Going to mass Sunday mornings. The BEST summers of my life. I went from maybe '76 to '82. I don't know if anyone knows if Brother Joseph is still around but he was an amateur photographer and would always send pictures of you home months after camp had ended. He taught at Malden Catholic. I'd love to see him again. I'm on facebook.

Went every summer when I was 8 to 12 or so. Remember it well. Still think I can make a necklace out of "gimp"! Went with 2 of my brothers in the late 50's, early 60's. Had fun, learned to swim, and "not wet the bed"!!!! Used to live in Lowell.

Hello,

I am one of Nurse Pollinger's daughters. We still talk of our fond memories of Camp St. Mary's. Nurse P sends her best. She is 82 years old and doing well. We have a facebook page called St. Mary of the Piners. Feel free to join and remember. Camp is long gone, well, except for Pollinger Hall. The last building built named after my parents. Come on over to facebook, we'd love to your stories! Best Regards to you all. God bless!

Does anyone remember Mrs. Babe Ruth coming to the Camp? It was sometime in the mid to late 60's. She gave us some of Babes old practice balls and other stuff I don't remember. I still have an unsigned baseball.

Couldn't find your FB group? Is it still around?
I fondly recall Camp St. Mary's. My cousin Mike and I got picked up near Zayre's in Lowell, and we both spent two summers in a row there for two weeks at a time. We'd be divided into "Teams" and would compete in different activities each day to earn points for "The Championship" at the end of the week. Archery, hiking, scavenger hunts, crafts, "catch the pig", where they would grease a ball and we'd swim and try to score with the ball. Movie nights in the hall, good food in the mess hall, they'd play old story albums at night like "War of the Worlds" or "Superman" on a record player to put us asleep at night. Church in the Chapel. I had a great time there. I would LOVE to see old pictures of the place.

Just drove by where camp used to be and was curious as to its existence, Went there late 40's for a few years. Came from large single mom family in Lowell so was a real treat to get to go swimming and actually do stuff with other kids.
I know this post is old, but on the chance that you get a signal when someone reply's to your comment, could you tell me where the site of the old camp was? I also would love to drive by and revisit old memories.

Carole,
Camp Saint Mary's was of course on the shores of Long Pond in Pelham. I believe the access road was off of Shurburne Rd, maybe McGrath rd or Jones rd in the north side of the pond. Look it up on Google Maps or Google Earth and youll see what I mean.
