Ah, cashier woes. I worked at Cub Foods to help put myself through college, and would often be assigned to the express lane. Often, if the times were less than 15 (limit 10), I'd gently remind them that "next time" please keep in mind that this lane was for 10 items or less. If it was more than 20 items, I'd steer them to another lane, and receive many grateful looks from those in my line with less than 10 items.

It pays to be assertive AND polite.
