Newly hired superintendent cut jobs and slashed budget at Saranac Schools. Pushed the headlee vote thru which caused business property tax to increase, lied to the community saying that the schools budget was horrible, then after the tax increase passed the state audit discovered 200,000 that wan't there prior to the vote...This borders on election fraud...He is disliked by the staff and hired an elemetary priciple who is despised, because they are Friends....Enrollment dropped 200 kids since he started as Superintendent..Good luck Cheboygan...you are getting a real winner...The first cuts will come this spring...

Anyone read the article in the cheboygan news about dropping attendance in the Cheboygan district? This is exactly what happened in Saranac...know a teacher in the district...tell them to get ready cause the cuts are coming...this guy is a slash and burn superintendent...he enjoys bringing misery to people....big phoney...after he left Saranac the numbers were adutied and enrollment hadn't decreased it had actually increased.... Alters the numbers to affect his agenda...

Anyone read the paper today? I just want to say...I told you so...Don't believe this guy...rally the community and demand an audit of the numbers ... Fact find...Saranac state audit revealed 200,000 more than the community was made aware before the big budget cuts in Saranac....The young energetic teachers are the staff that get displaced(due to union/seniority) the school is left with the highest paid most unionized staff that will than demand a pay increase.....Bauer is a broken record...same job different place...

It seems you have a personal issue. A supt. is just a spokesperson when it comes to school budget. The work is done by the business office and the decisions are made at the board level. The Supt. rarely makes any kind of move without first getting the opinions of his board. That includes something as minor as removing a coach from his position. Unfortunately, those outside of administration dont know this because Supts. are ussually presenting info. to the public as if they thought of it themselves or as if they made the decisions. Not the case. Your school board is likely to burden some major blame for Saranac's problems.

Wow what a highly paid spokesman the superintendent is. The board could have just released a press statement to make cuts on a 5 cent peice of paper. Funny how Saranac problems really improved the minute that the Superintendent left. I know nothing of the coach issues, I am talking about someone who was brought in to "recommend" to the board that cuts need to be made. Another words someone who can spin and make it seem like a school is in a dire situation to acheive a goal or agenda. The board is acting on the recomendation of a person that they hired. They would look pretty foolish to oppose them. Saranacs board finally did. Cuts were to be made again until someone actually checked enrollment and found it higher than the Superintendent reported... Funny the board seemed to diasagree then..they only vote and act on what is reported....do the research, check the facts its not a grudge.. the man is gone from my school system, its a warning to yours. Funny how I could have predicted this back on Mar 12,2008. Same story line too. Insert different name on script, read script, and than make cuts. Last post on the subject...just know that you were told so...

A school budget is FOYABLE and simple to understand. There are line items with budget amounts and expenditures. All money going out is acounted for as well as all money coming in. To validate this the budget is audited. What the "community" will decide is what do we cut? They are having a community meeting to discuss this very issue. The community is represented by the board, which is an informed (Not by the Supt.) and well educated bunch. What would a Supt have to gain by the trickery you speak of?
Did you lose something dear to you at your school?
You say "he makes cuts because he enjoys bringing misery to people" Whew! I cant get on board with that.

To answer your last question and than I am REALLY so done with this...
-what was lost..
-Students that left the district directly because of poor Superintendent decisions.
-board member seats,(IN elections)since they supported the direct input from the superintendent.
-a faithful assistant principal because he did not support the slash and cut policy(middle of the year teacher cuts??(oh that doens't affect a kids education).
-IN a "School of choice" enviroment the ability to choose is marketing ...when the superintendent is telling everyone "hurricane is coming" and than the state audit finds big money that the community and board did not know whas there...I can only conclude that agenda was involved (perhaps by some board memebers)but students left cause they thought the school was losing quality programs
-Faith (by parents)in the educational process/stability of a district
Was he hired in Cheboygan because the attitude supports the agenda?(hence the he makes cuts because he enjoys bringing misery to people) or did they hire him solely based on his love of children and education/community.
-To sum up...Its now Cheboygans concern, but shouldn't you at least look at the track record? I have nothing to gain or lose from any of thisand cannot affect any of it, nor actually want to.-I agree its the communities decision and I realize you can argue with me on all these points. I would agree with you on some things. Just look into the history. Thats all I am saying....Do with the info what you wish. Hopefully the board is smarter than the Saranac board. Good Luck, Hopefully you can get thru your "supposed" budget crisis and emerge better for it.....
"FYI..the audit does not occur until the following spring after the years budgets are set, schools are closed and programs are cut. At that point how do you fix the mistakes.....Ask Mr Bauer...His favorite line in Saranac was..."Well I am a rookie superintendent".....

FYI... school audits always occur in the Fall because the school fiscal year runs from June- July. This is in conflict with the States fiscal year. Therefore the State forecasts per/pupil spending cuts that the schools must build budgets on. Later, the State finds money (ussually an increase in per/pupil) and the schools are able to build a little fund equity. Maybe Super Dan bit too hard on the states budget projections and made big cuts-later he was awarded the money(or found it as you say)by the state. In any case, we will watch Super Dan closely and your concerns are appreciated. Cheboygan is a working class town and when people have a job, they work hard at it. The older I get, the more I realize things are never what they innitially seem. Dont hold that grudge too long. I think you should get on a board and learn more about these things. It seems it interests you and you seem to want whats best for kids. Stay positive.

Thanks for correcting me...I meant fall, but was thinking spring(Because thats when cuts occur and typed that by mistake.) Regardless an error occured,it affected the town, students, and staff and its not corrected for months. Sure don't lose any sleep over it, but you had something that Saranac did not have ( a History and a track record) so its easier for you to look for things that don't make sense. I remember the statement...("when the audits occur they may find some money but that money would be a couple of thousand at the most...not real money to make a difference")
But that statement was made during an emotional time when people would be most likely to vote for a tax increase.(AGENDA?) you can read the board minutes online...just google Saranac schools they are all posted...You can see all this info... thanks for listening. Info is yours to do with what you choose....Just realize that it is out there.....
