Canoeist Drowns in Cheat Lake

The body of a canoeist has been recovered from Cheat Lake in Monongalia County Officials say the man drowned after the canoe he was in capsized.

Another death. I guess summer has stated. I wonder how many deaths have occured there since the lake was made. You would think with all the renovations and restrictions they have imposed down there that the death toll would be dwindling. Yet every summer it seems there are at least two drownings a year in the lake.

I currently boat on Cheat Lake and have done so since 1966.
In all that time, my family and my cousins, uncles, aunts and countless friends that boated with us, we have NEVER had a serious accident, never anyone that needed to go to an emergency room, let alone anyone drowning, because for 1 important reason: WE ALL WORE LIFE PRESERVERS AT ALL TIMES! For goodness sake, it's just common sense! Would you go out in the rain without an umbrella? Would you drive a car without buckling? Gee, how about skydiving without a parachute? Of course not! The same goes for boating! You could be an Olympic swimmer, but if you fall in the water, hit your head and get knocked out,(or have a seizure) a life vest will keep you afloat!! YOU CAN NOT DROWN WITH A LIFE PRESEVER ON! End of story!
So when will it become law that all persons regardless of age will be required to wear life preservers when you are in ANY type of boat? That's when you will see a decrease in these type of tragedies.

i ALWAYS swim there, and i honestly dont know how its possible to drown if your not goofing off and if your wearing a life jacket.

my nephew drowned in this lake 17 years ago tonight. his name was julio. he was 7 years old.
I have never been here but would love to see it. rest in peace julio. you would of been 24 years old. we miss you!

I was there sat. aug 15 and witnessed a tubing accident in which a girl lost her foot completely and her friend who wasnt wearing a life vest i pulled from the lake just as she was going under as the boat she was in left the scene with the girl who lost the foot i was wondering how the girl is and my deepest regrets to the canoer and family and friends
