This particular surgery death is not rare at all, it’s just another “Cosmetic Quack” performing cosmetic surgery in some unregulated-rented strip-center space, for profit-just greed plain and simply! This is about the 30th like “cosmetic Quack” related-death I’ve posted about. If you have any doubt simply type “cosmetic surgery” in the search field of this Chattanooga Topix page, grab a cup of coffee!
However, what is so very interesting are, Ms. Kathleen Haley, the executive director of the Oregon Medical Board, comments. She stated:“this was the first case in her 18 years at the Oregon Medical Board that she could remember a doctor facing criminal charges relating to medical care. The essence was she was really trying to help people, and do it as a friend, but obviously, one has to have professional judgment and training for this sort of thing, this case illustrates just what can happen without adequate personnel or supplies," said Kathleen Haley, executive director of the Oregon Medical Board. Well, Ms. Haley, what exactly are you telling me and the good people in the great state of Oregon? This has never happened before in your state? You sound somewhat surprised by this event... So there are no complaints filed against “Cosmetic Quacks” in Oregon? That YOU, along with your board, have NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE of other “Cosmetic-Quacks” injuring/killing trusting Patients in rented retail spaces, throughout your state? This operation was performed under the cover of darkness, on the very “skinny” side-too, it smells very bad Ms. Haley, very bad!
How much did the good doctor charge for her “Night” service or was it indeed how you present it to us,“ a friend doing a friend, a “Christmas” favor? Does this “activity” fit within the state regulations? That is your job, right? Was there any state-tax revenue due or was this surgery a “cash-only” transaction? Has the proper paper work been completed on this surgical death and reported accordingly? Ms. Haley are you attempting to cover your own lack of responsibilities in the enforcement of state medical regulations, here? You licensed this quack, among others to practice in your state, right? You stated “one has to have professional judgment, training, supplies and personal”… right? That’s a great statement but please tell us, what measures your board has taken to prevent another cosmetic-surgery related death from occurring? Your “boiler Plated” remarks over this poor woman’s death, are not well received down here! Additionally, when the state judicial system is finally relied upon, for medical-regulation enforcement, YOU Ms. Haley… have failed at your job! Your lack of remorse for this dead woman, did not go unnoticed either, maybe 18 years is long enough!
“Dec. 15, 2010, Dr. Abbassian performed a tummy tuck on Judith Desmarets, 59, who was her friend and employee. Dr. Abbassian, who practiced internal medicine, WAS NOT A SURGAN, did not have adequate backup -- including support staff, equipment to monitor vitals or a crash cart, which would have had resuscitative drugs, oxygen and a defibrillator. Shortly after Dr. Abbassian administered anesthetic, Desmarets complained of chest pains and shortness of breath. Dr. Abbassian ended up having to leave the room and call 911. In that call she was very distraught. By the time paramedics arrived, Desmarets was not breathing and did not have a pulse, according to the court complaint. Desmarets never regained consciousness and died four days later at Portland Adventist Medical Center. The medical examiner ruled Desmarets died of inadequate oxygen supply to her brain tissue.” This BAD doctor was released from the Multnomah County jail Tuesday, after posting $50,000 bail.
Her next court appearance is set for Oct. 18.”

"Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office has agreed, as part of the deal, not seek any prison time. Abbassian will be sentenced to three years formal probation and 300 hours of community service. She will also be banned globally from practicing medicine in any capacity, the plea agreement states. The Oregon Medical Board (OMB) has fined Abbassian $10,000 for “her disregard of professional ethics, patient safety and lack of clinical judgment,” a report obtained by KOIN states."
