http://www.hithimagain.com/2008/02/02/the-fed... The Federal Plantation: On January 10, 2007, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives that is so repugnant and abhorrent it must be shown the light of day. H.R. 393, a.k.a the “Universal National Service Act of 2007,” seeks to impress every man and woman between the ages of 18 and 42 into forced servitude for the federal government for a period of two years. That is not a misprint. In my estimation, this makes Charles B. Rangel (Dem.- N.Y.), who introduced the bill, public enemy number one, with Osama Bin Laden running a distant second. See also, a list of cosponsors. What’s worse, this concept has mainstream traction, with Hillary and Obama both hinting at its support during this evening’s MTV/MySpace forum. Watch Hillary say she’s in favor of two years of national service (happens at about 2 minutes into the video). When asked about educational expenses, she says “... so that’s why I’m in favor of two years of national service, where you could earn up to $10,000 a year doing national service and go right into helping you pay for college.” No doubt the person asking the question did not realize that the national service she refers to is not optional. Obama’s pitch was even less reassuring (happens at about 5:40 into the video):“... one of the things that I’ve proposed, for example, is that I will give a $4000 tuition credit - every student, every year - so that they are not being loaded up with enormous debts, uh, but there will be a community service - a national service component. The military could be one way for you to get this $4000 tuition credit. Another way would be to work in an under-served school that needs help. Another way would be to work in an under-served hospital or a homeless shelter, or a veterans home. The point is, I think it is important for young people to serve.” This is apparently how he spins his platform of “Requir[ing] 100 Hours of Service in College ...” Need I even cite the Constitution?? Thirteenth Amendment: Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

As much as I hate the thought of a draft - it would equalize who had to serve, and maybe those in Congress would think twice about throwing our sons and daughters into a war - if their little Johnny or Suzy had to go too. Just a thought -

LL...do not apologize to this A-hole EPA Files. EPA...do you think all the kids on the street deserve a free ride or that all the welfare recipients deserve to take our tax money instead of taking care of themselves. I am all for the draft and anyone who wants to put it into action. I've been busting my ass for 27 years with the military. I've never taken a dime that I didn't earn.@ years wouldn't hurt anyone and its a great place to GROW UP and get some responsibility. You can bet the military folks will be backing this one and I will be leading the charge.

Yep, I agree. The military is a great place for kids to have to grow up - but, I just would like to see them grow up and become disciplined, etc without a war to mess up their young lives and ideals. No one needs to see their friends blown up at the age of 18. - that's why we need to vote in decent leaders that will do their utmost to keep us out of war and have decent foreign policies so that we don't start wars, etc.

Charles Rengal has introduced this bill year after year. He never has any co-sponsors (with the exception of his first introduction of the bill when he had 2 co-sponsors) and as far as I know, the bill only came to a vote once- and met with almost every member of congress from both parties, voting against it. The headline of this article is absolutely bogus and irresponsible in terms of journalistic accuracy. Rengal himself, even voted against his bill. He drafted this bill so that war supporters would re-think the current occupation, which as we all know has the military stretched thin. Continued occupation in Iraq almost certainly calls for a draft to meet the numbers required. The Democrats would like to start removing troops before this happens. The other concern is the amount of debt we have incurred already from continuing to borrow against resources that are unavailable. Hillary and Obama have outlined a plan to give away $4000 worth of college funds for those who choose to give 2 years to the military or public service. Other funding and federal loans will reamin available for those who do not choose the service option. That is neither a draft nor a vote for the draft- that is an option for college funds. To the bloggers who are in favor of the draft, for this particular "war" which will never have the justification that WWI & II had and which serves as no more than a Republican tool, by which companies like Haliburton stand to make millions on business contracts, do what you want with your sons but leave mine out of it. droid wrote: http://www.hithimagain.com/200 8/02/02/the-federal-plantation / The Federal Plantation: On January 10, 2007, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives that is so repugnant and abhorrent it must be shown the light of day. Not all of us want to go kill and torture people- if you want to then more power to you. But just because you're in the military it doesn't mean everyone should have to be. Have you ever thought about what you're fighting for? Personally I wouldn't go over to Iraq and kill people just because someone told me to, I have morals. Another concept you should think about- if you kill someone back here at home you go to jail, but over in Iraq you can kill whoever you want and you get praised for it, doesn't something seem wrong with that? I am against the Draft and this bill is ridiculous.

I have no problem with a draft, as long as everyone has an equal chance to get screwed... which we all know is never going to be the case.

Let's start avoiding pointless wars and funnel that money into government aid for less fortunate students interested in making something of themselves. I'm in college and I can personally tell you that 4000 dollars won't get you a full semester at any university above the community college level, and even at a community college that won't get you a full year. College tuition has risen so high it's ridiculous, if you want to do the impoverished a favor don't send them to war along side the rich people, just send them to a halfway decent school so when they graduate they can get a job and live the American dream.

I've given Obama money and I voted for him in the primary. Nevertheless, unless he renounces his rumored support for the draft, I will refrain from sending him another nickel, and will sit out the election. I have two teenage sons, and I didn't raise them so they could be butchered in a stupid, no win war in the middle east (or Russia). Barack, are you listening?

Obama should bring back the draft. That way, if he IS forced to use military force he can rely on his young supporters to help him out. How ironic would THAT be!

The whole point is to let kids decide for themsleves if they want to join the military, and there are plenty that choose to on their own.He cant force anyone to do something if they dont want to. Its a bad idea and you'll see that obama is nothing but a dictator and a insane person.
