Wife charged with murder of sleeping husband
The landlord of a house where authorities say a wife shot her sleeping husband early Tuesday morning said she “couldn’t sleep” that night for some reason, although she couldn’t explain why.
“I’m not in the mood right this minute to talk about it,” Patsy Monroe said of the alleged murder that took place next door at 335 Maple Grove Road near Plainview around 1:30 a.m.“Because I found out about it at 3:30 this morning, when I had started to work. So I’ve been up since almost two o’clock.”
Rita Lynn Spurgeon, 49, initially told authorities an intruder entered their home and shot her husband, Audie Eugene Spurgeon, 55, while they were sleeping. Officers discovered evidence that contradicted her story, they said, and Rita Spurgeon was charged with murder.
“Investigators believe Mr. Spurgeon was shot while he was sleeping,” said Sheriff Scott Chitwood.“After further questioning she was charged.”
Whitfield 911 received a call from a woman identifying herself as Rita Spurgeon at 1:37 a.m. She said an intruder shot her husband while they were both in bed asleep and fled.
Chitwood said a .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol, recovered in woods next to the residence in north Whitfield County, was used to fire “at least one shot.”
Capt. Rick Swiney said there were no signs of domestic violence from earlier in the evening.
“As to whether our officers were ever called out there, they’re still checking records on that,” he said. A Whitfield County Jail spokesman said neither Spurgeon had prior charges against them.
On the front porch of the residence were several pieces of furniture, including a wheelchair. A child’s bicycle lay in the yard, and on a side porch were several yard tools and power tools. A canoe and two stacks of firewood sat behind a shed. A well-kept lawn surrounded the house and outbuildings.
Neighbor Marisa Henry said the Spurgeons had lived in the rental home for around six months.
“I’ve not officially met them but I’ve seen them many times because they use the community Dumpster over here,” she said on Monday.“As a matter of fact, I just saw him yesterday evening and he came up and put garbage in the dump. Then about three o’clock this morning officers were everywhere.”
Henry said Audie Spurgeon was disabled after being struck by lightning, but she didn’t know when that happened.
“(Mrs. Spurgeon) was not in very good health herself,” she said. Asked if she’d ever noticed the Spurgeons arguing, she replied,“Nooo, no, absolutely not. As a matter of fact, my aunt (Patsy Monroe) said,‘I can’t believe that because it seemed like she just loved him to death.’ And I guess she did. I know (officers) were out here for a really long time trying to find the weapon and they finally found it.”
A neighbor who wished to remain unidentified said he had never seen anything out of the ordinary at the home.
“All I can tell you is when I came out this morning they were going all over the bank of that stream with metal detectors,” he said.
Rita Spurgeon is being held at the Whitfield County Jail without bond, but she may have a bond hearing in Superior Court on Friday, a clerk of court spokeswoman said. Her husband’s body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy.
