I just read in the paper that two options for all of these snow days are 1- add extra time to each school day and 2- the middle and high school students could make up their days online. I don't know who this Allison Oxford is, but she has made stupid statements before and this is another. One, the school day is too long already. I have an elementary and a high school student. My elementary school student could not benefit from an even longer day. I will take my 2nd grader out of school and home school him for the rest of the year, if this solution is put in place. Secondly, get real. Who is going to monitor and do they actually think that the students will get any benefit from sitting behind a computer and making up all these days? Some kids don't have computers at home, and I know for a fact that there are not enough computers avaliable at Murray High to accomplish this. Never mind the fact that Murray Co. can't make AYP and this would be a nail in the coffin. My child is an excellent student, but there are other students there that need every minute in school they can get to pass the gradutaion and end of course tests. I urge each and everyone of you to contact your school board member and let them know how you feel. Maybe before she acts as a school spokesperson she actually would think about what is coming out of her mouth and say we don't have a plan yet. I doubt any of those people who run our schools have been working either and until they can sit down and work out a plan, maybe they should just say "no comment." I just looked online and saw that this Allison is head of exceptional students, whatever that is. Why is she the contact person? Shouldn't our Superindent or Bus head person be the ones answering to the paper? I want to hear from our Superintendent on these matters and not some head of something we don't even know what it is.

I think any make up days should be done during Winter Break in February. Fewer people make out of town plans that week than Spring Break and at the end of the school year. And it will still be before they take the CRCT.

Dear Dr Reed,
Concerning the school day option. I don't care.

I can see not having winter break. The kids are getting it now. Longer school days would stink and lots of folks take trips Spring break week. I think the computer make up days would be a waste of time for high school. If they can do that, then just get rid of the teachers, save money and let everybody go to high school online.

I would rather read that lady's statements than Dean Donehoo. The man is a joke. He couldn't maintain a law practice, went into teaching which was a joke (I had him as a teacher), and then he becomes the legal guru for the school system. No wonder they have a couple of lawsuits. They use other real lawyers to represent them in real things, then why do we keep Donehoo? He was suppose to retire and the school system said he was. But he is still there. Did anybody see 20/20 when that lady was giving him down the road. I have seen smarter deer in headlights. What a joke!

I think we should let the garbage men of good ol murray country teach the kids on saturdays. Or maybe the tufters, it is a tough decision. Either way they would be learning new skills!

Now this came straight from the horses mouth in the county that I work for....concerning snow day makeups.....

"You cant add more time to the days. The only way you can do that as far as the state is concerned is to do it before the school year begins, so that cant be done at this time. One day can be forgiven in most instances, but these will have to be made up during breaks or at the end."

Now, how this county decides to handle this and stay in accordance may be another thing.

A friend told me on facbook that this same person who was saying in the paper today said on fb that the kids wouldn't have to make up four of the days.

It would make the most sense to go to school during mid-winter break. I agree with Leo Lion, it would be the best plan. I do know we are allowed 4 emergency days after that we have to make them up. If that includes the 4 I dont know, I wouldnt think so but in this system...Who knows what will happen!!

They added more time in 96. I was Junior at the high school and we had missed to many days due to snow and I think a tropical storm. They let us, students, vote on to either add days at the end of the school year or add thirty minutes to end of the school day. If we had voted the days add on options, they said graduation would not be affected and would go on as planned. But we voted in the extra thirty minutes. I think they started in late April thur to end of the school year.

Ok here is the real deal. It is 3 days. After that all days have to be made up by teachers and students. But since Murray County is on longer days shorter year it is actually like 2 and 2/3 days. And thats straight frome the good ol Murray horses mouth.

Per the central office, he did retire for 30 days. Returned to work as a part time employee. Great isn't it? Collects all retirement benefits and an additional salary!

I am like you they have had their winter break with this. Presidents Day is all the presidents birthdays in one so they wouldn't have so many days off, Good friday is the holiday three day's before Easter, and this is not just to do with hunting eggs.it has to do with Christ.take these days but do not take mlk day or winter break. something is wrong!!!!! If my child does not have to go to school monday, then he does not have to go those two days.

It is funny how we can take Presidents Day, but are too scared to take MLK day. How many people is this county celebrate MLK day? White folks need to step us and challenge this.

I understand where y'all are coming from. I am a Christian as well and hate seeing the students having to go to school on Good Friday, but if i remember correctly that has only been a day off for a few years now. I remember going to school on Good Friday.
