A fictional episode of one of the local CofC programs. Also a primer on one way to approach their arguments condemning the use of musical instruments in worship.

Fictional CofC TV host:

“Do you use mechanical instruments of music in worship?”

Fictional CofC TV caller:

“Yes.”

CofC host:

“By what authority do you play musical instruments in worship?”

CofC caller:

“Well, Psalms 150 says…”

CofC host:

“Woah, woah, woah. Which covenant are you under…the Old or the New?”

CofC caller:

“What? Well, I guess the New…”

CofC host:

“You guess. Hmm. Do you practice everything in the OT or pick what you like? Do you sacrifice animals?”

CofC caller:

“Well, no of course not. But in the New Testament it says that you should worship with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs…”

CofC host:

“Okay, but by what authority can you play musical instruments, when it only says to sing?”

CofC caller:

“Well, where does it say we can’t use instruments?”

CofC host:

“Exactly! The New Testament is silent on the subject. And so how can we presume to say that God gave us permission?”

CofC caller:

“Now wait a minute. The Bible is silent on lots of issues dealing with worship. By what authority do you have song leaders, song books, pitch pipes, PowerPoint, PA systems, and so on?”

CofC host:

“Well, now… um… those are worship aids.“

CofC caller:

“And where do you find the authority to use these aids?”

CofC host:

“Let me ask you a question. Do song books, PA’s and things replace or change the command ’sing’?”

CofC guest:

“Well, let me ask you a question. Does the use of musical instruments replace or change the command ’sing’?”

CofC host:

[uncomfortable pause]

“Er… do you know that the Baptist denomination is not found anywhere in the New Testament?”

I guess progressive Bill would have no problem with adding pizza to the elements of the Lord's Supper, right?

Does the use of pizza replace or change the command to take the Lord's Supper?

Cant you guys come up with something new? Poor comparison. Is adding a song during the Lords supper from the bible or from man? I love the silver platters used to carry the Bread and "grape juice"...wonder if they used Welches in the early Church?

[uncomfortable pause] ;)

We can discuss the Lords Supper at great length if you want to.

The CofC does not forbid everything that is not found in the Bible, but only the things which they feel they can do without. In an attempt to make this heresy legitimate, they pervert Sacred Scripture to prove that what is not found in the Bible is forbidden.

Here are some examples: In Genesis 6:14, God did not tell Noah not to use cedar, pine, oak, or any other kind of wood to build the ark, but God's silence on the matter did not authorize it. In Numbers 20:7-13, God told Moses to "order the rock to yield its waters." Instead, Moses struck the rock twice with his rod; God did not say not to do this, but his silence did not authorize it. In Matthew 1:21, the angel told Joseph to name the child Jesus; he did not list every name not to name the child, but his silence did not authorize other names.

With these and other examples, the CofC then gives this teaching: Ephesians 5:19 commands us to sing, Colossians 3:16 commands us to sing, and Hebrews 13:15 commands us to praise God with our lips; they do not command us not to use musical instruments when we sing, but this silence does not authorize it. When the first examples are compared to the resulting teaching, the perversion of Scripture is obvious, and there are some in the CofC that do not agree with this teaching.

Does the use of music replace singing or aid singing?

"Come on stage and sing us a song Shawn" If you played a piano you still would be singing. A first grader knows this. Have you ever attended a school singing where the kids sing various songs? They dont call it singing and playing. Youre invited to hear the kids sing, but we know that music may or may not aid their singing.

We know when we hear them sing that music may or may not aid their singing. I once held your view but its far too weak. Must we state "singing and playing" will be performed tonight by Tina Turner or can we simply say Tina Turner will be singing tonight and we infer that she has a band? Come on....a small child knows this. Dont believe me, test a kid on this and see and then test some adults who have not been brainwashed by you guys and they all know that music can accompany singing when the word sing is only stated. You know this too you are just too hard-headed to admit when you are wrong

No the use does not replace sing, no more than using other aids with singing.

In other countries rice cakes have been used by Church the of Christ and wine and other juices. Is this sin?

With the imaginative Moon in your house of significant others creating deceptive waves with dreamy Neptune, it's one of those difficult days in which you could talk yourself into doing or thinking almost anything. You normally have both feet planted firmly on the ground, but now it's time to indulge in some delicious flights of fancy. If you do disappear into a world of your own, be sure to return to Planet Earth in the near future.
