I hope you don't mind me posting this and that no one gets hurt by it.
My Cousin and friend David Larochelle was murdered in Southbridge almost 40 years ago now. He was 5 years old, had red hair and freckles, and was quiet, and wonderfully kind! His murderer or murderers were never found.
Unfortunately, when you type his name in on search engines, nothing comes up referring to him. So I am posting this in the hopes that he will at least be remembered some where!
He deserved so much more!
Thank you

I remember him. My son was in first grade with him at Charlton St School at the time. Why has no one put a sign at the park with his name on it? I also remember write ups in crime books on his murder.

If you can remember the names of any of those books, it would be greatly appreciated! The loss was paralyzing to the family. But I want my son who is 8 and daughter who is 18 months to remember him. I'll probably put a web page together for him. But it will not be easy! Thank you!

Really don't want to contact her to bring up David,(after years and years of trying she finally gave birth to another boy.) I don't want to do anything morbid, just want my childhood friend to be remembered. Thank you so much for your response! Anything anyone can contribute would be greatly appreciated!(Here's my work e-mail: [email protected])
Thanks!

If you are in Southbridge, Jacob Edwards Libery (sp?) has all the old news papers on film. You can also make copies of the story.

I just found a "Boston Herald Traveler" from June 21st 1968 and saw a tiny little article on page 41 which was the obits page about your cousin and decided out of curiosity to search for info about the case and sure enough noyhing except for your post came up.One of the surprising things for me was that this piece was so short and was buried in page 41 just a couple of days after the murder.Seems that the press back then censored these things which probably contributed to the murderer not being caught which is particularly tragic given that was probably not the first or last time he did this.

He came up missing after school one day, end of the school year. He was found by the water and had been strangled. That is to the best of my very poor memory.

The press was all over it, but nothing came of the investigation.

He was a special special boy! I was honored to call him my friend!

Check the above link out in the Southbridge

Recollections portion of my website from Jerome:
"My Cousin David lived down beside the market on Elm near Caron and we’d bend the fence by jumping it and we’d run and laugh and revel that we could leave his Sister’s so far behind us! He had red hair and his favorite thing to do was grin at you, he shared his toys with the poor kid that didn’t have any. When he was murdered it put a hole in our hearts."

Hello all...
I was also a friend of the Larochelle family when they lived off of Elm St and then Charlton St. I was older than David and friendly with his 2 older sisters. With time, we eventually went our separate ways...but I've always kept them in my heart. I have such fond memories of playing with them all...I remember the day this happend like it was yesterday. It has made an impact on my whole life and when I told my three children about it, I still cried. I'll never forget it.

Occassinally I would search the internet to see if there were ever any leads on this case....only to find NOTHING....until this page.

My prayers still go out to the family...and if there is ever anything I can do, I'd be happy to help.

Blessings.

I was one of the last people to see David before he was murdered. I later learned the name of his murderer from some neighborhood kids who saw them together - Norman or Normand Poirer, who was around 13 years old at the time. I gave this information to the police. They said his mother gave him an airtight alibi, but they believe she was lying. I hope they catch the bastard.

I've been following the Caylee Anthony case and also looked for any information about David's case. I had been thinking about him bc we were about the same age and his was the first such case (murdered child) I had ever heard of. I heard that he had been drowned in the small "pond" that was behind Henry Street field (?). I had also heard that a 30 ish year-old man (who used to hang out at the bowling alley near the AO, was obese, and had a sister who was also very large) was responsible. My friends and I were terrified of this guy. I don't know his name. I think he was struck by lightening and killed many years later. I don't know if these were all rumors or true, but I hope someday they catch the person responsible!

I was a student at Mary E. Wells when that happened; I shared classes with Sharon. The Police Dept. held a special assembly in our school auditorium to inform us kids and community about what had happened to David. It was very intense and graphic film presentation. There was a sense of panic and desperation in our small community with the crime being unsolved. To this day, I still am moved and sympathize with how deep a loss that was for your family. He is not forgotten.

I also seem to remember a Daniel Larochelle from Green Avenue or maybe on the corner of that street and another in Southbridge who died as a young person. My recollection was coming home from school -- I think it was 8th grade or freshman high, which would put it as circa 1967 or 8 -- and being told that my former classmate had hung himself. I don't know why I am thinking of him these many years later. Was he part of the same family?

If you have a subscription to GenealogyBank.com , the site has 11 newspaper articles from June 1968 about David's murder. He was my second cousin, but I don't remember him because I was very young when he died. I could have sworn that Chicky was quoted in the Southbridge newspaper about Molly bish, talking about what happened to her family and telling the Bish family to never give up looking for the murderer.

Omg, David was my best friend,I was with him the night before he died. I visited his grave sight last year and took a photo that I just showed my wife. As I type this letter my eyes are filled with tears because I just can't make any sense of why he had to die the way he did. David was one year older than me, I was 7 he was 8. I can see his face as if it were yesterday , cute red head freckle faced kid that could do no wrong. I remember his wake, I stood over him remembering how much he made me laugh and how innocent he was. I was at the park that night before he went missing. I remember playing hide and go seek, David was it, and we were all hiding, it was just getting dark,I knew my mom would be mad at Me if i I got home after dark so I just went home. t the time I lived on Thomas street just down the street .i think all the kids did the same, but David never made it home. The next day I heard of his death. I was so afraid because I couldn't comprehend at the time what had just happened to my best friend. I told my wife this story and I told her that I was the one who should have died that night because I'm the one who was suppose to be it! I'm sorry David . I visit David's grave every now and then and I sit there in tears as I did the day he was lowered into the ground. As far as who killed him, it was rumored that a fat guy named Ruberdu who years later was struck by lightning while sitting on a park bench. I really don't know what made me go looking for his story tonight but I am so glad that even after more than 40 something years, people still care enough to remember one of Gods most precious children that was snatched away from us way to soon. To all of you who wrote something on this sight, please keep him alive in your hearts, he is always in mine. See you soon David . God bless you.

I remember your cousin's murder, I lived on henry street. Iwas five going on six. I thought David was my brother's age which was around seven or eight in 1968. I heard they found him near Carpenter's pond where we used to play. I heard he was strangled and possibly tied with a belt. I was very young at the time but my mother who was David's CCD teacher was afraid for my brother and I to play outside because of the murder. I am sorry to hear they still have not caught the murderer. I heard a man on Worcester street was a suspect. He lived across from Vic's spa. He was later struck by lightening around 1980 while sitting in his lawn chair. Good luck in finding your cousin's killer. I have never forgotten your poor cousin and this tragedy.

I have wondered for years what ever came if this case. I was about 18 when this happened. I know there were rumors about Rubeye being the killer but that is probably all they were. In recent years I have searched the internet about this case after it came to light that a very popular Southbridge resident known to many had molested one of my sister's as,a child. I believe this person lived in the area if Henry St and that he could possibly have been the murderer. If I said the name you would be shocked. Everyone in Southbridge New him and he was very much admired . He had a job that placed him around young children, was known for playing Santa and was also connected to the police dept. So I guess he would never have been considered a suspect. He is no longer living of course but I am sure my sister was not his only victim. Sincere condolences on the loss of David. I am sure he us resting in peace and his killer is not.
