Wow i was inn town a few weeks ago visiting some friends. Lets just say it made me sick! All the empty houses running down we rode by my old stomping grounds the montgomery pool so sad! My friend explained to me how know one wants to live in montgomery anymore the drugs have taking over. I just remember the old montgomery how people wanted to live in town, there were plenty of places to shop and eat. The riverbanks so pretty but she said they can hardly sell river lots in town anymore! Well i started thinking can the city of montgomery do more. I mean after all this is your town. How about tearing these old vacant buildings down, how about making people cut their grass and picking up trash. I stopped by the hospital that day and numerous people had concern for the town. Like the broken sidewalks, broken streets etc and their saying the same they would not live in montgomery and the ones that do are eager to leave.were losing what was once a great town! Before long you want be able to sell anything in this town! Maybe a whoke new office including mayor and councilmen are in order! And i just dont think after living away for 5 yrs i could even ride thru the town again you have a few good houses left in town but the ones falling down around just destroy the whole apperance of your house what a shame

Well, I am one of the ones still living in Montgomery and I live in one of the nicer homes you described. Yes. Lots of changes over the years. People here do try for all the things you talked about, but we do not have a City government that cares. The people know there are drugs, but don't do anything about it. They claim they are understaffed. I don't get it either, but there are good people still living here. It is home.

I have to agree with you. Montgomery has hit an all time low. Please understand, there are a few people in town that honestly try to "clean" up the city, report the drugs, and complain to city hall about the overall poor condition of the city. There is ONE major problem and that is the officials that are in charge. The city has no money to tear down vacant houses. Letters are sent out on cleaning up property or cutting grass but it is never enforced. There is no money to repair sidewalks. Businesses have left because the mayor has publicly stated he wants this to be a "retirement community" and is happy with status quo, thus losing more B&O taxes. There are a handful of people that continue to ruin this city, both officials and residents that don't want things to change. People have tried to run against the incumbents in elections but lets just say the elections are not always what they appear to be. Owners of the run down property KNOW they don't have to repair or clean up because they know they don't have to, nothing will ever be done to them.

Is is very sad. The only hope this city has is to merge with Smithers and hope for a new and better administration. Period.

Good luck in finding decent people to run against the people that are in charge of the elections in this town. The word is already on the street that one of the worst of the elected fools on council plans to run for mayor. We are screwed.

Tell the town govt to stop spending all the money on the police dept. They recently just bought to expensive cars, which only two officers are permitted to drive. The chief drives the brand new suv home to fayetteville everyday. Thats uncalled for. And he is the only one permitted to drive it. Then they have a brand new car that only one officer is permitted to drive. The rest of the officers have to beat around town in junk cars. What a waste of our tax payer money to only allow those two people to drive those cars. Thats a waste of resources. Plus the chief spends money at the police dept like its water. Have the place audited. You will see the over spending. Why does the dept need to outfit the dept with swat wear? Buy hi-tech weapons? They need to work on the drug problem. Put the money to use in doing that. clean up the city.
I agree an overhaul of the entire city needs done. Get rid of the mayor and council. Wipeout the entire police police dept. Start over fresh. The chief of police helps the drug dealers. He likes being their buddy. He lets them know when the drug raids are coming. The officers are corrupt. They just look the other way. The dept is so untrained. They have no leadership. The chief of police himself got beat down just a couple weeks back. They all need training. They hire rejects. First you have the chief. Whom is very untrained. All of his guys hate him so bad that they quit and go to other depts. They have a dog that they spent a large amount of money on that has never found drugs in this town. And thats unbelievable cause the drugs are everywhere. That dog should probably hit on everybody it comes around in this town. Then yous have the black guy Sharpshire. All he does is write tickets. Dont care about anything else except that. I guess thats why he gets to drive the new car and nobody else can. So after he gets off from working dayshift, the car sits and isnt permitted to be driven by anybody else. The nightshift could use that car. Back to the officers, Burrows is next, he is one that corrupt. All of his family and friends are mostly criminals. So they get the free pass. Then you have a few youngsters that have no clue what they are doing. Then John Hess who cant even see well enough to shoot his firearm. failed so many times, but a miracle happened and montgomery "passed" him. Next is Travis Grose, whom was the talk of topix a few months ago, when he would date rape girls. Meet them on personal sites and lie to them in order to meet. Then when meeting, would force himself on them. Now he is in trouble with the courts and his wife. And has since been suspended from both montgomery police and tech police and has had his gun taken away. The police dept did have good officers. but they have since moved on to others depts. Its a shame also. The city people liked these officers. Thats probably why the chief set out to get rid of them. Its time for a change. Nothing will happen unless we get rid of the Mayor, council and the rest of the city police. Let the state police or sheriff dept take over until a new trained dept can take back over. If everybody would stand up to the city govt about this overspending, abuse of city resources, and corruption, we could make a difference.

When the law abiding citizens in Montgomery try to do anything, they become the bad people. The mayor knows exactly what is going on and he protects them. Then you have a person on council that rides with the chief all the time. Does the chief need a bodyguard? WEll, people make fun of that all the time. They are all dirty dirty dirty!!!!!!

My friend was robbed but he was made out to be the bad guy for asking too many questions. He was the victim and was ripped by the chief. The good people in this town are treated indifferent because we expect too much from the city.

The fire chief of Smithers is sitting in prison for using FD funds, yet our mayor got off with no punishment for using a city credit card for his personal use. What is right about that. It was even in the Gazette and still nothing was done. The mayor doesn't run this city. The girls that work at city hall do but he keeps getting that big pay check.

And how many law suits have been filed against the city police? How much money has been paid out because our police have abuse people? People here are profiled all the time but if you are a known drug dealer you don't have to worry.

NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE UNTIL THE CITIZENS DEMAND IT.

The whole town needs to be cleaned up. The city council needs to be removed and a new council needs elected. The police dept needs investigated!! They take money from the drug dealers and dont do their jobs. When someone really needs them they are a damn joke! You cant trust any of the cops to help you and if you tell on a dealer the cops give up your name! Lord forbid they be real gangsters or something because your life may be in danger. Luckily for montgomery citizens most dealers are too high on other drugs to kill us....NOT! What a disgrace of a town and town gov't!

Please if you care when you see Les Thomas ask him, no beg him, to run for mayor. He is our only hope. He cares for the city and works daily to try and improve things. There is another council person that plans to run. All I can say is, if it is not Les, it would be the worst thing to ever happen to this city. Worse than we have now.

LES, please run for mayor.

Why is things so different across the river in smithers? We dont hear of these things going on over there. Look at their crime compared to ours. We need action like they do. Start taking the drug dealers to jail and all the other criminals like they do. Send a message. Its so much different. And why? We could have a good police dept also. One that protects our citizens and dont associate with the drug dealers. We do need a new mayor and council. Then dismantle that police dept and build a new one.

Montgomery went to hell in a hand basket when the Mayor and police sided with the drug dealers. I have personally seen the police car drive around a drug deal. Never gonna change until they are gone. And elections are fixed so, there you go. Just sad

Montgomery is lacking the old town leaders, when John Fragile ran Montgomery and Al Falbo ran Smithers they were great towns to live in . The drugs and the cops were controlled and the working man got a fair shake, how I miss those ole days.

I wonder if Sandy Cole is ready to sing? It has been a while since she took the fall and I'm sure she has total recall of the "true" politics in Montgomery.

So I'm guessing you think you are better? GREAT. Put your name in the hat and you bring this city back. I really wish you luck. I am open to anything that is better than what we have now and I'm sure you have an abundance of great ideas on how to bring back business, generate revenue, fix the streets and stop the drugs.

Good luck!

I remember a time when the streets of Montgomery were packed with shoppers. People traveled to shop at Collins, Mearns, Whites, Embees, Rileys and Fort Pitt. We had two dry cleaners, a shoe repair store, two jewelry stores, and much, much more. I remember when kids lined up a Sears to sit on Santa's lap and went to Henderson's and Murphy's for the best hot dogs. I remember the really great cheeseburgers and Converse tennis shoes at City Center and great pizzas at the Smoke House. And there was always a lot of fun at the Varsity Grill. We even had a movie theater!

What has happened? I know some will blame it on the poor economy in southern WV and others will blame it on the the competition of the big malls in Charleston. But I believe that if we still had the business, people in this area would still support it.

All I can say is those were the good 'ole days and never to be had again. Only if someone with vision will step up to the plate and make it happen. Say yes to business and no to drugs.
