With 1/3 Nelson cops on the " take " & drunk themselves there should be less DUI arrests , but 2/3 less ! something is wrong with both Nelson patrols & record keeping . But on the bad side Meth use is up 1649 % in Nelson Co. since 2008 . Keep on hiding Sheriff David Brooks your going down as the friendliest worthless Sheriff in nelson Co.history.

Like Cville doesn't look the other way when it comes to crack. The cops here are to afraid to roust the dealers we see every day, safer to bust a guy with 2 plants with storm troopers in a helicopter. Albemarle stays in the bushes most of the time, bunch of toads.

If Mr. Brooks was not doing his job, he would not be serving a second term! You sound like one of the people he put in Crime Times? Don't let the tears fall on your keyboard loser!

Have to agree with C-ville 5 0. I live right off 151 between three breweries, a bar and three wineries in close proximity. Drunk driving is not down, sadly, the deputies don't care. I see more state police on 151 than Sheriff's deputies and VSP are few and far between. The talk has always been what a death trap 151 is and it's worse now. this isn't an example of things getting better it's an example of officials putting their heads in the sand.

Thats right!Their heads are in the sand, so that these businesses can strive. With 4 brewers, and 10 wineries within 10 miles, good times are going on in nelson county!!!$$$$$

The state police don't care either , they are on 151 to harrass truck drivers.

Not true. He is serving a second term only by a very few votes. Half of the county wanted to replace him.

I found the exact numbers..... 9 votes.

Brooks beat Bridgwater by only nine votes, 2,606 to Bridgwater’s 2,597.

When 49.9% of the population wanted a new sheriff, this indicates Brooks was not doing something right.

That would be Sargent Steve Davis, He really is one of the best nelson has ! Actually the best.Could be sheriff or captain in 4-8 years. Also R. B. over length trucks on 6 - 151 is a real problem & Steve will ticket them to save lives !

Oh, the haters and sore losers are out in full force today.

"Retired Sheriff": He won by 14 votes. That election just proved that people are gullible and will believe any lie they are told. We're currently being fed the same amount of garbage in the current elections and people believe whatever they are told.

It's the job of State Police to do traffic enforcement. It's all they are responsible for whereas the Sheriff's Office has a full range of responsibilities.

I see deputies out patrolling all the time. I think it's a disserve to these hard working men and women to imply they are not doing their jobs. Of course, it's so easy to hide behind a computer screen and spout off opinions (not facts).

Cville 50 - where is your proof of these allegations you make? I find your post reckless and irresponsible, but again, it's easy to hide behind an post on a website.

Correction: If 49.9% wanted a new sheriff, that means that 50.1% wanted the old sheriff. It's basic math people! I didn't know so many cons have computers these days!

Whats going on is with the ridiculously slow 45 MPH speed limit on so much of Hwy 151, you can't tell drunks from regular law abiding drivers. Everyone is weaving when you drive so slow its hard to steer.

There were various and differing reports on the final count days after the election and recount. 9 votes, 11 votes and 14 votes. The point remains the same, Brooks is not serving as sheriff because a VAST MAJORITY of the voters wanted him. He barely won the election. I think (as in MY opinion) this story would be about an increase in DUI arrests if Mac Bridgewater had been elected as sheriff.

Another person who has no clue what local agencies and the state police actually do. The Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police both handle anything from littering to traffic to homicide investigations. They work side by side, day in and day out. They respond to calls together. They back each other up every day. They work out of the same building. They go to dinner together.

Your post is reckless and irresponsible when you claim the state police do so little. When a Neslon County resident calls 911 and says a man has a firearm and is currently attempting to break into their home, a Virginia state trooper might be the first officer on scene to assist them. They don't have the option to "stage" a half of a mile away and wait for backup to arrive like larger cities and counties do.

Some day I hope to learn where some of you experts on rural law enforcement get your false information from.

The real message here is get out and vote. There is a much more important election in a few days. GET OUT AND VOTE!!!

This is correct, BASIC MATH. I have no intent to belittle you personally, I speak in general terms, but 50.1% is not in reality what most intelligent and educated people consider to be a majority vote. With 5,500+- votes being cast, losing by only 9 to 14 votes means Mac Bridgewater had shown the residents the light. If the 326+- that voted a third candidate had voted Bridgewater, Brooks would have gone bye bye.

In local and state elections, you are right. But with the electoral vote process in place for President, 1 more or 1 less vote doesn't mean much in my opinion. My wife and myself agree that we need not vote. She is an Obama worshipper (job related), and I want Romney. We will simply cancel out each other's vote.
