"Some residents have expressed concerns"??? There are hundreds of us who are outraged! We were NEVER notified about this thing and only found out about it a couple of weeks ago! There is a lot more at stake than just noise, including poisoning our water supply & destroying our Historical District! There are numerous working farms, historical estates & wineries, including Pine Knot, Estouteville, Enniscorthy, Plain Dealing, Coleswood, Tallwood, Old Woodville, Woodvile, Nydrie, Totier Creek Farm, all the Dave Matthews' Best of What's Around Farms, Belheim Winery. There is also Yancey Elementary School less than 1 mile from the site and located where the proposed rifle range is POINTING! The medical office & site of the new Intergenerational Center (JABA)daycare and senior center is less than 1/2 mile from the range and also where the rifle range is POINTING!

This is the most irresponsible idea ever! How is it that just a month ago they wanted to close Yancey School because they didn't have any money, but they have $1.5 million for a firing range, when there are EXISTING ranges for the police to use 45 minutes away?!

I might be mistaken, but I think the EXISTING range has given the local police agencies a timetable stating the time by which they are to stop using the Rivana Rifle and Pistol Club facilities. There's been too many negligent discharges... BY POLICE OFFICERS!!! One shot himself in the leg, and another shot himself in the hand. The range is concerned about their liability if the next negligent discharge by a police officer kills an innocent bystander.

So, I am guessing you didn't mind having a garbage dump in your backyard when it was in full swing? Vote to bring back the dump instead!

It amazes me how this board finds money to waste...I mean spend on these non-essential pet projects. I am all for police training but surely there were other options. Over one million dollars to shoot guns seems a bit much. Will it have a sauna and a pool too?

"Sellers says that can't come soon enough for his department. Right now, officers only receive weapons training once a year - well below the national average of three times per year."

3 times a year doesn't seem too often to drive 45 minutes

That is why they need training.:)
I wonder if the SWAT team also gets training once a year.

Last bullet, going to make sure it hits target.
Only fired gun once in 14 years - shot a dog by mistake.

Do you know anything about marksmanship training? He is shooting a pistol. Pistols are close range weapons, not like in the movies you probably watch to get your knowledge of pistol usage by police.

And if someone took your picture at an oblique angle, and cropped the edges, it would look like you are standing right in front of the target. 25-50 feet or less is optimum range for a handgun.

Oh, OK. Target practice 12" from the target; what are they planning to do now, enlist
senior citizens?

He's NOT 12" from the target. His target is NOT even in the picture...shows how little you know SHERLOCK
