Please be respectful of our family as we deal with this tragedy. We are all trying to make sense of this and need prayers, not inappropriate comments and assumptions. Sonny was a good man and loved his family. He will be missed by us all.

the headline is wrong - it wasn't "Rio Road"; it was "Rio Mills Road". Another example of poor online editing. Unfortunately this is not unique to NBC29. The Newsplex is notorious for misspellings and poor grammar in their online news pieces as well.
The typo in the headline has been corrected. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I didn't know them at all. However i have been on the receiving end of incorrect comments and judgements. So sorry the family has to deal with fools opening their mouths without facts. It seems all who knew him as a good man, don't waste your important time dealing with unguided people. Take care of important family matters and don't read anymore comments here, &'expect people to be respectable, as they should. Some people just don't care what they say to others at all. Blessing and prayers to,those family members involved.
One more thing really NBC29, where is your compassion in this matter? You do have a responsibiliy to families here. How would you feel if this was our family member being picked apart. Show some respect!!!

When u have an incident such as this, not knowing if the suspect is going to go on a shooting spree and kill innocent people, you bring in everybody.. A Game Warden has more power than you give credit for Mr Free thinker.. Think out of your tiny box...
Not Game Warden, but Conservation Officer!!! And they do have full LEO powers.

Welcome to the internet. And you can best believe that this thread is FAR more respectful than many that have gone on here. 29 is pretty good(too good) about coddling people and tending to their complaints than most websites, however I have yet to see anything here that is any more than speculation, and even then, done fairly tastefully(at least toward the victim). The killer on the other hand, was a sissy and took the easy way out, instead of facing the consequences for his actions, which should earn no respect from anyone.

Thanks Brandon! Our family has enough to deal with to worry about people's comments. It is so hard to read the things said about someone who would give anyone the shirt off his back. To "Just a thought" thank you as well. The media's coverage of this has been a complete nightmare and no compassion for the victims family has been shown. Anything to get a story I guess even if it means hurting others.

RIP Sonny - our family has lost another way too soon! We love you and will miss you terribly.

Sonny Marshall, the victim, was just minutes away from leaving his home and traveling to the airport to board a jet to California. It was an anniversary trip for him and his wife. His brother was on the way to pick him up when the shooting took place.

When the wife heard the gunshot, she went out to the garage. The lunatic shooter, for whatever reason, told her to walk away if she knew what was good for her. She's one very lucky person to still be alive. This maniac could have shot her too.

Idiots like this shooter will eventually cause all citizens to lose their right to own firearms. I hope it never comes to that, but every day it's the same old killing each other here or there.

If you bothered to read a couple post above yours, you would have seen 29 admitted to the error and corrected it.

Lone Justice's statement is correct. For more info, please visit the VA Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries' site: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/enforcement/

In 2008, Game Wardens were restructured/retitled as Conservation Police. As Game Wardens, they could enter private property and buildings without a warrant (and with less probable cause than the typical police officer must prove to get a warrant) when situations related to game/fish. Since being restructed, their powers have (at least in some communities) expanded into other areas of policing when even slightly related to Conservation. Check with your local authorities for more info, if interested.

Hope this helps,

Officers with the Greene County Sheriff's Department and Virginia Game Wardens all assisted during the incident?
Really?
Really?
There were no speeders or deer involved I think!
What a joke!
The Albemarle officers and DGIF Conservation Officers(formerly Game Wardens) were directly dealing with the threat and securing the scene's perimeter. Game Wardens might normally carry equipment better suited for non-urban incidents. Greene SO, and Charlottesville PD assisted by securing the two ends of the road involved, so that no one entered or exited the scene without permission. It took so many officers because of the tactical issues and the weather issues. Emergency workers working outside for extended periods of time need to be rotated-out so they can go to medical-rehab and get checked and, in this case, allowed to warm-up, get food, etc. Until this incident was marked "under-control", they probably had to keep officers all through the woods, in the cold rain, snow, sleet, etc., surrounding the scene.

Hope this helps,

This is so sad to hear (read) what the day was supposed to be and what it ended up being..Thank goodness the man did not shoot Ms. Marshall. Another senseless murder. Prayers to the family.
