CRY A RIVER AND GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON. Close all the doors on schools and jobs and let everyone stay home with nothing to do like OBAMA wants for the USA people. Why is all this coming up in the last few months? It's time for some of them to go before it's to late. The CHANGE is suppose to make it better but HAVE ANYONE SEEN ANY BETTER. If so then go talk to some one getting laid off or the ones trying to make ends meet like these school systems and see who's happy NOW.

This is one of the main problems. If schools do not spend the money that is allocated they have a hard time justifying next years budget for more money. A vicious cycle for taxpayers.

You are absolutely right. If a program funded by either state or local funds is efficient enough to live below their allocation in a fiscal year, administrators know their operating budget will probably be cut next year. The surplus does not stay with the program, it goes back into the general coffers and it is almost guaranteed that the operating budget for the coming year will be cut by the amount of the surplus. So, what happens, when program administrators realize they are going to operate at a surplus, they make sure before the fiscal year ends that they have found a way to use up that surplus. Efficiency is not rewarded, it is penalized while programs that do not live within their means are rewarded with ever increasing funds.

According to the CCS website, they spend $16,669 per pupil per year.
If they offered school vouchers to a school with high quality standards such as Tandem, the tuition is only $14,073.
So if the city offered school vouchers to parents who already think the school system stinks, the CCS system could save $2596.00 per child.
Then everyone could be happy :)

So the 16,669 is an all inclusive total?(Admin staff, electricity, etc)

You're good. I heard a commentary yesterday that Liberals now want to be called "Progressives." Uh huh. Ergo, by the same token, higher taxes will now be called "hope" and unemployment is "change." Welcome Brave New World.[hack] I don't want "change" -- I want FOLDING MONEY!!!

"significant challenge". Well transportation cuts a) combine the middle and high school start times at 8:45 and 3:45; b) put elementary students on the middle school routes, lets have our parents take some responsibility for these students and instead of having a bus stop every 500 feet in sub divisions make one or two like the middle school students have; c)get rid of the wasted programs such as gateway,(which serves 22 students out of 600 at my school; and middle school orchstra which holds classes with less then 8 to 10 students. Students who want technology course can not get the electives but there is a full time orchestra teacher. Arts programs have been cut to less than $1 per student per month, cut some music programs that much and save some money. The parents who utilize these music programs can opt for private programs just like all the parents of students who play a middle school sport. These sports programs for middle school students are supported by private groups, Soca, Jefferson football league, YMCA-NOT BY THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS!!!

Nope, the Operating Budget is $71,409,320 for year 2009.

The Per pupil expense is $16,669 for year 2009.

And for what? But a bunch of teachers that are stressed out and pressed to make children recite rote learning to pass SOL's for The No Child Left Behind Act. Kids from the Public school can recite anything you want but when it comes to applying it, the school system is pressed to get good scores.
Children need to learn how to apply what they learn, not just knowing what circle to fell in on a SOL test. That is why Tandem School, Waldorf, Peabody, and other schools do so well. Children learn on a holistic Level.

I wish Bob McDonnell will allow vouchers for the State of Va. Is makes sense all around.

The schools have a lot more money than they let on. They are crying over money that they won't be able to throw away come end of year, surplus. I work in a school and with their new iphones, ipods, and unlimited travel reimbursement, I think the county has been getting robbed all these years. Why is it that the Police Department has to account for every single thing, down to turning in receipts for meals they purchase at training and are held to a specific dollar amount for food a day,$35.oo while the schools are not. Sure they bring back receipts for food but there is no cap on the dollar amount other than not paying for alcohol. Also, the schools have new iphones that the county is paying for, they are able to make personal phone calls on these business phones. If I am not mistaken, the IRS is cracking down on this, so much so that the Police Department can no longer make personal phone calls on county owned cell phones or they have to pay for them. What about the schools? They are still chatting away to whomever they like. How can one department not be held accountable to a county policy but another is having it's feet held to the fire? Where's the story on that one?

That is a bargain! In Fluvanna they spend $23,882 per student and taxes are the highest in Virginia! That is why we elected a new school board! We will be firing our overpaid teachers soon!

This is because they are too stupid to realize that "progress" only refers to movement in the direction you want to go, and there may be others that don't want to move in the same direction.

You know he does have TWO months experience in the senate. How in the ---- did the voters in this country think he could run our country? All Muslims hate us so add him to that list.
