There are some ignorant people on this comment thread. The biggest free housing comes in the form of the mortgage interest deduction on income taxes.

Why should I subsidize somebody living in a $500,000 house who gets to write off their interest on their taxes. If they can afford the payments on a house that costs that much or more, they dont need any help.

oh and by the way, a single person would have to make $22/hour to afford a standard 2 bedroom apartment anywhere in this country.

why dont you go occupy somewhere else. Home owners pay property taxes and work, therefore paying income taxes, they own cars, property taxes, point is, somebody living in a 500,000 dollar house is contributing to the community. unlike these leaches.

So sad their computer rooms are locked. Wow and to think i wasted all this time working and paying off my home. Maybe I should have spent my days in free housing working on what i demand I should get for free. Guess what PHAR, when people who work can't afford to do maintenance it has to wait. You are getting a free friggin ride. If you don't like the lack of perks that come with your free ride get a job or two like the rest of the world and do something about it. I would be ashamed to have my picture posted like these leeches.

I know lots of single people who do not make $22/hr who struggle to maintain an apartment and are not a bunch of leeches who want us to pay for their apartments. And can you add cable, laundry, central air, elevators, community centers and computer rooms. How about we throw in housekeeping services. Free transportation? Oh please tell us how we can make the life of a leech more comfortable.

Or living the free ride dream through the department of corrections. This article fired me up sez. I like the comment that they are employed as artists. The art of drawing entitlements. i'm taking your lead. Entitlement cowgirls. Cause all the baby daddys out shooting hoops and dealin dope or shooting hoops waiting for parole hearing. Want to improve the air quality? Quit smoking crack and get out in the fresh air and find a job. I had a friend who worked maintenance in public housing, a few years ago, and the stories he can tell you about how these people treat their free housing would make you understand the anger I feel. How about the residents do some routine maintenance instead of expecting it all for free. I needs somebody to shovel my walk. That grass needs to be cut. Replace that window got knocked out in a drunken frenzy. THESE PEOPLE WON"T EVEN CHANGE A LIGHTBULB BECAUSE THAT IS THE JOB OF MAINTENANCE!!!! Get off your lazy butts and improve the quality of your life. When you are rich then you can be entitled to hire people to do maintenance.

I say a tent city would be a perfect solution. It is good enough for our troops, and maybe those who chose this lifestyle will make better choices and work their way out and up.

This is the proletariat. The useful idiots that politicians keep right on the edge of poverty and give enough goodies to so that they'll keep voting for them. This is what happens when politicians look out for their short term selves instead of the good of the people.

A whole bunch of wasted lives. These people almost NEVER climb out of this and do anything with their lives. It is a real shame.

Wow! So incredibly racist. Is it right to blame the poor for being poor? Aren't poor people a requirement of our economic system? I do not see many thoughtful comments here. Just ignorance and hate. When you think about people on public assistance, try thinking about the little kids who would go hungry without it. Is it their fault they are poor? It is interesting how anonymity allows you all to show your true colors. Way to go Charlottesville!

Race has nothing to do with this issue. There are plenty of all races on public assistance who ABUSE the system. Those "poor" children are taught at a very early age how to work and manipulate the system. They want you to feel sorry for them. Why do you think there are generations of these people abusing the system. I have been working since I have been 16 and never been on public assistance and have "WORKED" for all that I have accomplished. I own my own home which will soon be paid off before I am of retirment age. I don't expect a handout from anyone and I was taught by my parents who could not even speak english when they came to this country that NO ONE owes anyone a living and you have to work for what you want in life. What ever happenened to this philosophy? All you bleeding liberals make me sick to hear that this world owes someone something. Now the norm is to get disability instead of a job and get what you can for free before someone takes it away from you. Makes me sad to think this is the america in which I live. May God Bless you all.....

Here's one you could afford on less than that, unless you don't consider Nelson county part of this country: http://charlottesville.craigslist.org/apa/370...

You are exactly right Guardian! No one in public housing or prison should have better living conditions than our troops. Let them spend a year in a tent walking 100 yards to an ab unit or a port-a-potty that has been used by squat shi**ers and then maybe they will understand that life is hard and rewards those who actually work for a living.
