No one can replace Cloud since I've been following him for years. But Nation would be a good stand-in. I'm glad his mother was saved so he could be born.

This is a breathe of fresh air at the right moment-when the world needed it! It made me cry-because Cloud meant so much to the entire world and to the people who learned of horses because oh him-those who already loved horses have just renewed vigor with this birth! The horses of the world celebrate you!

The public also needs to educate themselves about the BLM aka Bureau of Land Management that has spent years removing thousands of wild horses off of public lands and moving them to holdings in different states. Claiming they are starving, but then it is found out that that public land was filled up with cattle and sheep herds once the horses were gone. These horses in the wild are being rounded up and removed to extinction. There are not only the cattle after the public land the horses were given in 1971 by Congress but oil drilling, fracking, and numerous other companies that want the horses removed to they can use public lands to enrich themselves. Google what I have just told you will be surprised at what the BLM have done to the wild horse populations in this country.

The BLM doesn't round them up because they ARE starving, but because if they are allowed to exist unmanaged, they WILL starve. They're trying to keep it from getting to that point. And yes, there are livestock grazing the same lands. But the BLM is a multiple-use agency. This means they have to balance many different uses of the same land. That include livestock grazing, oil and gas production, recreation, wildlife, etc. Managing wild horse populations is only part of what they do and it has to be made to coincide with these other uses. They are not a conservation agency.

It is a myth that wild horse populations are dwindling and that the BLM is trying to exterminate them. I know several people who work in the BLM's wild horse program who are just as passionate about horses as you and me. The last thing they want to do is exterminate them.

That said, I think it's ridiculous to be breeding mustangs in captivity. Nation better be a hell of an ambassador for his wild relatives in order to justify his existence.

Thank goodness Kelly and her foal are in a safe place. I would have liked to have seen better journalism on NBC29's part. So much is going on with the mustangs and so little was brought up in this piece. I am very grateful for everything Legacy Mustang Preservation has done to help, but more clear to the point media attention is needed. The BLM has to change it course of action.

If the horses are in danger of starving - why not the same concern for the cattle & sheep??? Must be because THEY aren't in any danger, right? Now that just doesn't make much sense. Stating that the horses & burros are damaging the land, but not the cattle & sheep doesn't make sense either. I'm sure there are people working for the BLM who love horses, but unfortunately they aren't the ones in charge of the roundups & LTH. These horses aren't reproducing in leaps & bounds - they don't have litters of foals - it takes almost a whole year from the time a mare is bred until she has a foal.
The BLM is claiming something like 20% increase? There are probably way less than 30,000 mustangs left free - but 50,000 in short term & long term holding. Less sense all the time!

Managing horse and livestock are different. Cattle aren't left out there to reproduce and increase numbers. The numbers allowed out there are set. That's not the case with horses...their numbers keep increasing. In order to keep the number of animals the land can support, some horses must be taken off the land. So yeah, it DOES make sense if you think about how all the grazers out there are managed.

And sure the horse populations increase that much. They have no predators. So the amount of successful foals is huge, much larger success rate than other species who are predated upon.

And yeah, it sucks that so many are in holding pens but there's not outlet for them. If they are left out on the range, they will degrade the land. But there aren't enough willing adopters. I'm not sure what the solution is there. But they certainly just can't be left out on the land to reproduce without check. It's unfortunate that that's the case but in this world we've created, we've left ourselves no choice but to have to "manage" things like wildlife and wild horses. Our fingers are in everything so then to say we need to take a hands-off approach with something is impossible.

So yes, all these things do make sense. You just have to think a littler harder.

Well, I will try to think a little harder. I was being sarcastic. And yes, I realize there are very few predators ANYMORE. They have been and are being killed off. The horses aren't "reproducing without check" - they are being "managed" by the BLM. With the roundups & the PZP, etc., being held in long & short term holding - they really cant exactly overwhelm the range. I have to say I doubt that there is a huge amount of foals that survive-just the ones that are injured & killed during the roundups cuts down on the number of them. We will have to agree to disagree, I guess.

Welcome Nation, to our world, where you will help us spread the word on all your brothers and sisters in captivity as well as in the wild. You will be our champion in saving the wild mustangs. We are proud of the super hard work done by Jamie and Craig Dodson, Lisa Friday and Christine Flint, and the documentary efforts of Cinfocus Media Productions, and Marestare's webcam that helped us all witness your birth and the days that followed.
