Don't worry its a numbers game and a way of getting your attention. Pedestrians in the sub-communities of NVa aren't valued by these statisticians.

The pedestrians in C'ville who don't use the crosswalks; don't press the button to turn on the embedded lights; runners who dart across against the traffic light; cyclists who swerve into traffic and don't obey the traffic lights... Where are their statistics. Its up to vehicle drivers to protect those fools from temselves. I'm surprised that there aren't more pedestrian incidents due to the ignorance they display everyday - walking into traffic with their view blocked by a cell phone - OOPS! WHACK! SPLAT! Stupid "Peds" - take responsibility for your actions.

You know, I think you are probably pretty intelligent [your post makes a good point], but you are making yourself look like a fool typing this way.

Nowhere in this City is this more obvious than at UVA. I am amazed at the people, not just students, who cross University Avenue nowhere near a cross walk, those at cross walks that walk against the light, people who walk out in front of cars and never look because they are on cell phones. I'm also amazed that there are not more pedestrian related accidents. Thank goodness my husband and I are defensive drivers and keep alerted to these nuts. It also boils my blood when we have to screech to a halt and these people bang on the hood of our car like it is our fault they stepped out in front of us.

Several weeks ago we were leaving the University area, driving down Emmet Street just past where the University band practices. Three young males, most likely students, were standing on the sidewalk, looked directly at our approaching car and darted directly in front of us. Thankfully, for my husband as the driver, and the young men, we were moving slow enough and traffic was light enough, that we were able to stop without incident. Drivers do need to respect speed limits and crosswalks, but pedestrians also have responsibilities for their own safety.

Several years ago, also in the University area, a bike rider, not paying attention to where she was doing, nearly hit our car. We were stopped at a red light. She slapped the hood of the car, said something very offesive and continued on, paying no attention to the red light. If more pedestrians and cyclists were ticketed for jaywalking or ignoring traffic laws, maybe they would be more aware. I've seen cops sit and watch riders on bikes run through intersections with no regard to stop lights or stop signs.

I know we should "share the road" but we shouldn't have to give it up completely [motorists]. Now on the other side of the coin, I stand for about 10 minutes each afternoon waiting for my husband to pick me up [we carpool] and I can't count on my fingers the number of vehicles that DO NOT stop at the stop sign on Hospital Drive [coming out onto University Avenue]. I can't count the number of cars that DO NOT stop for me when I'm in the pedestrian cross walk. Sometimes I stand there until someone else walks up beside me and then the vehicles will stop. I'm not one to walk out in front of a moving car hoping the driver will see me and stop. Interestingly, I'm a middle-aged woman, not particularly a stand-out, but if a young college co-ed walks up beside me, you can believe the tires screech to a halt.[That's just an observation]. To get back on track, I have confronted UVA police officers, City of Charlottesville police officers and asked why they can't enforce these traffic sign violations [refering to the stop sign that I would say 7-8/10 times is totally ignored]. I have seen people almost get hit by these vehicles [the crosswalk is next to a brick archway and motorists coming out of Hospital Drive cannot see if someone is about to step into the crosswalk], therefore, all traffic approaching the stop sign NEEDS TO STOP and look.

Okay, now that I have ranted about that, I guess my point is that whether we are a driver, bicyclist or pedestrian, we all need to be alert and look out for the other guy.

It's because our pedestrians and bicyclists are morons and that problem only gets compounded by the morons running the traffic lights

I agree there are pedestrians, esp. around UVA grounds that are worrisome. But trying to cross busy streets in Cville is dangerous even for people who use common sense and crosswalks. I thought the flashing light installations would help drivers recognize their responsibility to stop at crosswalks but more often then not they drive right through despite the lights. It is dangerous and incredibly frustrating.

Daily Horoscope for January 4

Cancer

You may not be privy to every little thing that's going on around you, but so what? Crabs can't always be in control, but you don't need to feel insecure, either. Thanks to your electronic devices, you appear to be a little godlike to those who don't have the same access as you do at the moment. Just make sure that you memorise the important stuff in case the system goes down.
