An informal poll of teachers showed 47% of them are actively seeking teaching positions outside Fluvanna. That was only the percentage actually willing to admit it. With the board of supervisors promising to make some "real cuts" next year, Fluvanna is creating a real crisis!
Do you think we're about to enter an education crunch? 20% of new teacher leave in 3 years, 50% of new teachers leave the profession in 5 years, and 50% of ALL CURRENT TEACHERS ARE SET TO LEAVE OR RETIRE IN THE NEXT 5 TO 7 YEARS. Fluvanna, make your bed... these are facts. BTW, this is nationwide; I've been saying it all along, labor is a market.

The school board voluntarily gave up a full 2% of their pay, but still have the same workload. The teachers are not giving up ANYTHING because the furlough days are days they do not work, on top if the dozens and dozens of paid holidays, and the fact that they really do very little work at all to begin with! It is the BOARD that is making the REAL sacrifice! The teachers are not giving up a stinking thing!

Any of you whing teachers dont like it, do us all a favor and get out of Fluvanna! I promise you that you will not be missed at all.

Excuse me but I believe furlough means a day off with no pay so teachers are giving up MONEY to be furloughed. If that was not the case, how would furloughing save any money? Think about it.

You are obviously someone who sits on the outside and looks in; have you ever spent a day, much less a week in a classroom to see how much advance prep which translates to beyond contract time, it takes to run a good classroom. Everyone's job looks easier than yours.

Since you can read (I assume) and write, you should thank a teacher.

We can all thank the teachers for big annual tax hikes. We can thank them for draining Fluvanna for the taj mahal high school that was not needed. We can thank them for low test scores, and graduates too dumb to get a job. We can thank them for wasting millions wihout results.

When you see a teacher, be sure you thank them PERSONALLLY!

right, because parents, and students don't burden any responsibility for themselves or for their children, and the BOS don't shoulder the responsibilities for the budgets and decisions they make.

So teachers are the ONLY people that are receiving taxpayers' money in Fluvanna County? There is no one else we can thank for "draining Fluvanna"? You haven't gotten pay hikes because of teachers. Teachers' salaries in Fluvanna are going down thanks to recent practices. Teachers are not responsible for the new school. Why don't you blame the citizens who have children who need the educational system?

People often forget that labor, too, is a market. You don't encourage the best and the brightest to go into a profession by paying welfare wages. Why is it that people want to go into law or medicine? It's not because they have some greater altruistic purpose, it's because that's where the money is at. I've always contended that only fools and saints go into teaching. Why would anyone go into teaching? You get abused by students, neglected by parents, burdened by bureaucracy of administration, and now vilified by society. It wasn't too long ago that teachers were among the leaders and the most respected of society, and that has all changed. Education isn't just about babysitting our children. It's about leaving a legacy for the future generation and the success and security of the nation; I don't understand why that is so difficult for people to realize this. For that, those like you teacher and D Dee, I thank you and the rest of the saints that sacrifice wealth for legacy. It truly has become an act of greater altruism.

There seems to be a ground swell to convey to Fluvanna BoS the plan to use alternative funding to fill the budget shortfall that is causing furloughs for Fluvanna Teachers:
