Elvis Shifflett is thirty-eight years old. He is a son, a father, a brother, an uncle, and a friend to almost all who knows him. He loves animals, Nascar, music, and restoring antique automobiles (which he did not sell to support a “habit.”)
This letter is not being wrote to dispute Elvis Shiffletts alleged charges but; instead to defend his character. Elvis had been portrayed to be a horrible person and if I didn’t know him it would probably be easy for me to judge him based on what I hear and read. But I do know him. Not only is he my uncle, he is also one of my closest friends. He is the man I could call in the middle of the night if I had car trouble and the man who would give me his last dollar if he thought I needed it.
Elvis surpassed everybody’s expectations when he overcame a troubled past and tried not to become a statistic. He had a very successful business, raised four beautiful and intelligent children and built a home for them from the ground up. What happened? Imagine your life slowly falling apart. Imagine watching everything you worked so hard for slowly slipping away. The family is not blaming anybody for this but should the public judge this man based on hearsay. Until you walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, should you judge them at all? All of us have made bad choices in life, some worse than others, but that does not make us evil. Making one bad decision can change anybody’s life and unfortunately, you can’t just erase a mistake. Was Elvis a danger to the public or to the law enforcement officers- NO He was a scared man who felt that he had lost everything. And why shouldn’t he …… his picture was all over the media -armed and dangerous. Not just him, but his brother, whose cases are not even related.
I would imagine that the police chase was terrifying to Elvis but he still showed concern for his passenger and instructed her to follow police procedure.
As for the comments being made about Shiffletts in general, it takes an ignorant person to judge people based on their last name. Many people perceive us as “poor white trash.” I am a hard-working man who had never been in trouble with the law. I own my home (no, it is not on wheels); have excellent credit, and a beautiful daughter. Most of my family led a similar life.
My daughter has spent several evenings making her Uncle Elvis Get Well Soon cards that he will probably never receive. Why, because I believe, the family is being treated unjustly. We have to get our updates on Elvis’ condition from the news. Imagine worrying all day at work…planning your day around the news broadcast to find out the condition of your loved one. How would you feel waking up in the morning and turning the TV on to find out if your uncle survived the night? And then wondering, what exactly does serious condition mean?
Despite the critism that the name is facing, I am proud to be a Shifflett. I have a wonderful and loving family that will continue to support each other through out this ordeal.
I am not asking for sympathy from the public. I just ask that you not judge him or his family so harshly until you know all the facts.
My love and prayers are with Elvis and I will continue to stand by him. To me, that is the definition of a FAMILY.

I am Elvis' sister and I would like to speak for the whole family. We are very upset and very disappointed with this whole ordeal. There were over 50 law enforcemen, police dogs, helicoppers etc. looking for one man. They were told by the friend that was with him in the car that he was UNARMED. I donot know this friend, but I believe it when she told this story on the news.It took alot of nerves to get on t.v. in front of so many people including the law officers that were at the scene of this major man-hunt if they were watching it.She stated over and over he is unarmed. There was a gun in the car and if he was this dangerous man that the news wanted you to believe, he would had taken it with him when he ran, but he did not and he told the friend to make sure she kept her hands up so she would not be hurt. Elvis got shot several times by 2 officers on Oct.20th and our mother, his dad and his 4 children were allow to see him 3 days after the shooting for 5 min. None of the family members have been allow to see him since. If he had not gotten shot by these 2 officers, he would had been over at the complex where we would be allow to visit him. Since he is not at the complex we cannot see him and if we call to get an up date on his condition we get to hear a voice from the other end to say I'm sorry I can't give you any information you will need to call the complex. Rather you agree or not we can only ask if this was a family memeber of yours, I'm sure no matter what the reason was for being in this sitution you would want to see him.I do not believe with so many law enforemen that 2 officers felt they needed to shoot him, not just to wound him, not just one time, but several times. We know that he was shot in the neck and we are not sure just how many times he was shot in the chest.(Both of these could have been fatal) My brother is at Health south for rehab for his legs. The news also stated that Jeffrey Wayne Shifflett was wanted armed and dangerous, but when he surrendered he was barefooted and UNARMED.We are not blaming the news because they report what they hear. If it had not been for the news we would have not known that my brother was shot and taken to the hosiptal and we had to watch the news to find out if he was still alive, so for this we can only thank the news.We are waiting for the report to come out in trying to justify these two officers for shooting an unarmed man.......with so MANY other POLICE OFFICERS there.

This isn't the first incident of over aggressive police action in Alb. Co.. Haven't they been trained with stun guns and pepper spray? because if they were in that much danger of an unarmed man, they should have used it. Crazy. I feel bad for your family.
But on the other side, pull over if the entire police force is behind you! damn! Turn yourself in if your face is on the news! Those are choices those men made.

No one needed to unload a service weapon. That was entirely unnecessary use of force. Those officers should be held accountable. FAMILY of victems: take out a civil case. I wish you luck.

If there is a warrent for your arrest...turn yourself in. If you cause a manhunt....don't cry....If you turn yourself in...you wont be shot. No one has ever been shot walking into a police office surrendering peacefully.

He deserved every bit of it for leading authorities on a man hunt. Time and resources were wasted trying to track him down. Others in the public were in jepordy because so much resource was spent on this worthless piece of crap running like a coward. Its not about being as good as me..Its about repsecting authority, and answering for your mistakes like a man.

Dave, put yourself in the families shoes. If Elvis or Allen were your children and were wanted by the Police (which they only become so they have the right to kill and get a paid vacation for it) would you want the same for your child? I THINK NOT!!! Give some thought about the situation before you start running your mouth about something you know nothing about. Neither Elvis or Allen were armed but the law did not care about that, they just get a little too trigger happy. What the poice did to Elvis has affected him for the rest of his life, he will never be the same again. I think that he has been punished enough. The officers that shot him down like an animal just go about their days as if nothing has ever happened. Oh they say that they wish it didn't have to come to that, but they enjoyed every minute of it. The officers knew that he was unarmed but still felt the need to shot him. As for Allen, a young man died who didn't have to. He was another one that was unarmed and again the game warden that SHOT and MURDERED him knew this but just didn't care. To Allen's family I'm sorry for your lost. As for Elvis' family, well his my uncle and I love him no matter what he has done,(which was only a domestic situation that got out of contro). He did not deserve what he got.

Dave I am very disappointed in your comment that Elvis deserved what he got. I had to read your comment myself before I could even believe it from someone else. You emailed me like you really care about Elvis and I wanted so much for you to be the one that would get the whole story from Elvis himself. I quess the emails was just to find out all you could. You MUST be the kind of person that works on both side of the fence. In case you don't know what this means. TWO FACED!

Wanda I believe you have me confused. If
elvis wanted his side of the story to be told without any prejudgments...he shouldnt have led the authorities on a manhunt.

Dave, you don't have to be such a JACKASS about everything. I also have common sense and repect. As for the civility well as the saying goes, what comes around goes around. I just hope that the officers that shot my uncle down like an animal doesn't have to pay like my unlce has. That's the difference between my family and the officers of the law, we have a heart. By the way DAVE my uncle is not a worthless piece of crap nor is he a coward, you could only wish that you had the Balls that my uncle has. If Elvis didn't led the officers on this manhunt then there wouldn't be a story to be told and my family would not be having to deal with "IDIOTS" just as yourself. You are so quick to judge Elvis and you know nothing about him. Elvis is the type of guy that would do anything for you, give you the shirt off his back. If you were feeling down he would lift your spirits up, just by being around him with that big smile of his. He could make you laugh when the last thing you wanted to do was laugh. He didn't like to see you upset, he cared. I know by me telling you a little about Elvis isn't going to change your opinion on him one bit, but that's okay because my family and myself know the real Elvis Gene Shifflett and he isn't the monster that Linda or the media is making him out to be, so that's all that really matter to us. We will never stop loving or praying for him.

That explains it..the only supporters are family members. Believe me..most of society believes he got what he deserved. Don't tell me how nice he was....if he was that nice, he would have not endangered the public welfare. I am not judging him as a person, only what his actions created. I dont know him, and dont care how nice he was. Only judging his actions
