EXACTLY!!! That's what I have been saying to anyone who would listen (and many who would not). Just let us buy into Medicare.
We let the free-market believers and those who love their health insurance keep what they have. Those of us who can’t afford the free market and hate the abuses we suffer at the hands of insurance companies can buy into Medicare at rates which reflect the actual cost of the program (plus a little more to cover a sliding scale for low-income people; maybe a little more to help Medicare's long-term funding problem). Everyone gets what they want.
The free-market people know that government can’t do anything right and is always less efficient and more costly than the private sector, so this would obviously be no competition for the highly-efficient for-profit insurance industry. And since those who buy into it are paying all the costs, it would be revenue-neutral! NO COST TO THE TAXPAYERS! AT ALL!
For some reason (insurance cartel campaign money maybe?) no one even wants to propose this in Congress.
Medicare doesn't reimburse hospitals enough for the care they provide as is how can more buy in at the lower rate without more hospitals going into financial trouble? Do you want us to end up like Japan with 50% of the hospitals having financial troubles? When the hospitals here have to shut their doors because they can't afford to keep them open who will care for the patients then?

Wow. All I can say is that you libs really can't STAND it when someone else gives you some of your own medicine! I have attended several teaparty events; there is nothing fake about these people, and if you really think otherwise, you are delusional. Wake up and accept the fact that more than half the country does NOT worship the ground that Obama walks on. Wake up and accept the fact that vigorous debate is part and parcel of a free society. Wake up and accept the fact that liberal outrage over anything and everything that was George Bush was far worse than anything yet to occur at a teaparty.

If you anit-democrat republicans could look outside of your blinders on individual issues, you would see that the health care system in this country IS broken. Is this the best plan that could be created? perhaps not, but its better than NO action.
I really get tired of people who are so anti democrat that they cannot make indivudual decisions. No one has been able to show how this bill will hurt americans. Before you claim addition to the debt, please read review the findings by the non-partisan congressional budget office. anyone can put a spin on any bill - pro or con - but if you dont educate yourself independantly, you will get suckered.
Thanks Tom, assuming you back out on the cap and trade, you will have my vote next year.
Dave, I say show me the money...Give me one example of a government run program that costs nothing. Creating this monster will NOT save us money. Don't you wonder why it will take 4 years to go into effect (so that credit can be claimed before the cost of it is really known) If the president and congress can begin a war overnight, then why can't they fix this in a few weeks? Because they can't!!! Why was this bill not offered online to be read by Americans with enough time to respond? Mr. Obama told us 72 hours. Didn't happen! Voted on late on a Saturday night; why not wait till Monday? I'm tired of watching my paycheck shrink because of entitlement programs for the slackers, ne'er do wells and foreigners. Mr. Perreillo got 3 of the 12 things he found lacking in the bill. If I worked at 25% efficiency, I WOULD GET FIRED! Why did he settle? Because he is just like all the rest, more worried about maintainning his seat of power, than in doing the right thing. Tom, we are DISAPPOINTED IN YOU!

I think there is a lot of hysteria over health care reform that is not justified. Those on the right are particularly heinous in their hyperbole and claims are often exagerated without backup information to prove and verify their arguments. The conservatives are not Logical in their way of thinking. It is disenguous, false and fake to claim concern over the National Debt when there was no expression of concern during the Bush years when the National Debt was expanded by over $4 trillion dollars!! My sense is that the propaganda propogated by the conservative political machine has overstepped the bounds of civility and discourse in debating the merits, pro's and con's of a much needed reform of a basic service that we all need to survive. Medical and health insurance reform, as we know it in this country, are desperately needed, and we all know it.
To gain true reform, we would have to go to a single payer option to force insurance companies to lower costs, or to eliminate them totally. Why do we accept that we have to ahve health insurance companies? This country did fine without them for well over 200 years. We didn't have large corporate insurance companies until 30 years ago. We did fine without them before that time.
This kind of ranting does nothing to improve the debate... "We the people who stand for our constitution better start taken back our land before it is too late. Medicare, social security, taxes are in jeopardy with Obama and the democrats who want to enslave our country. We stand up or shut up America." <<< Totally irrational and illogical. Which planet does this guy come from? We don't need this kind of talk.

Someone in this country dies every 12 minutes, 45,000 per year, because they don't have health insurance, or because they were denied eligibility for services. Does that make you stop and think for a minute? Those who want to deny health care reform are condemning more to die. Where is your sense of morality and compassion? And yet, you scream about abortion, You are Pro-Life..
Doesn't it bother you that 45,000 peopla a year die in this country due to lack of health insurance coverage? Do you even think about this?
Where is your respect for the sanctity of human life? I would like to know. Can someone tell me how it is helpful to our society and country to deny someone insurance coverage?
We've all heard of the "death panels", which was an expression coined by the insurance panels to describe the panels of doctors who decide insurance eligigility... who decide whether someone lives or dies. What I want to know is how could you possibly be so selfish and so lacking in compassion for your fellow human being? Can someone tell me?

$1 trillion plus to save 45,000 people per year. I don't think President Obama is compassionate at all. If he was really concerned about his fellow man, he'd outlaw cigarettes and beer. The American Cancer Society states that 440,000 deaths per year can be attributed to smoking. That's almost one per minute. Then there's alcohol abuse. That's about 75,000 per year and then add into that the 25,000 traffic fatalities each year.
I wonder how many of the non-health insurance 45,000 factor into the over half million who die due to tobacco and alcohol?
Why doesn't the Administration want to take on Big Tobacco or the brewers and distillers? It would save a lot more lives! Oh! The humanity!!

Did you even READ the article you linked? The man who said that 50% of Japanese hospitals are in financial trouble OWNS A HOSPITAL! Of course he thinks the rates are too low! And the 50% statistic was unsupported. I'd be willing to bet it's the same kind of made-up statistic Republicans use to start wars and fight for their insurance cartel contributors.

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." – Thomas Jefferson
That being said, I in no way condone Bush-43's expansion of the debt in the same way I cannot condone President Obama's. After running on a platform of reducing the deficit, this Administration openly admits they will at least double Bush-43's deficits through 2016. I guess they thought that tackling the National Debt was too hard a problem for them to solve so they picked a fight with someone everyone can relate to....health insurance companies.
I love it when so many people call it health care reform. Nothing could be further from the truth. "Reform" means to improve a system as it stands either slightly fine-tuning it or at the most extreme, changing serious problems without changing the system itself. The Obama/Pelosi/Reid agenda isn't reform, it's a demolition. I find this particularly funny living in Charlottesville where the Daily Progress reported on Sept.4, 2009 that city and county officials were considering privatizing the Ivy solid waste transfer station because it would be "more cost effective". Local government can't even handle our trash, yet we expect the federal government to handle our health care.
The premiums are rising because the cost of health care itself is rising. Why? One reason is the technology is so far ahead of what it was only a few years ago. Try getting an MRI before 1980. Ask any football player who's had his knee "scoped" if it was worth it not to go under the knife. We got along so well without insurance companies in past because if you wanted that knee operation, the doc gave you a shot of whiskey, put a chunk of wood in your mouth and took out his saw. Feeling lousy? Take these two leeches and call me in the morning.
Another reason health care is so high, is that we as a nation are not healthy. We are constantly bombarded by ads on TV for fast food and you can't drive a mile without finding an all-you-can-eat buffet. Many are so fond of the health care system in the UK yet no one has even mentioned trying Ofcom's(Great Britain's communication regulatory agency) restrictions on what they term HFSS adverts. High Fat, Salt or Sugar commercials are severly restricted during hours where children are watching TV. A friend of mine in England actually likes the NFL but is appalled when he sees all the food ads on the feed he's watching. I wonder how the food industry would take that idea. I wonder how the media, who relies on all the advertising revenue, would like it.
And, Blue Cross and Blue Shield has been around for 70 years, not 30.

Here we go again -- we conservatives are always blamed and called unfeeling, uncaring, racist and anti-American when we stand up to say we do not want to pa for health care for those who won't work, or don't want to pay for insurance. We are NOT against healthcare for the disabled, or elderly (who have already paid taxes all their lives for this benefit). Also, we have freely admitted that there are many flaws with the current system, and have submitted a proposal to Obama. Instead of even considering this plan or any part of it, the Dems are meeting behind closed doors excluding Republicans. So much for working together and having transparency in government as Obama promised. They don't want it known the deals that were made to get the votes required to get the bill passed (the CA rep admitted that he received several million dollars for a medical training facility and so he voted yes). What else are we paying for to get this massive fiasco passed?

Thinker you are right on!!! May I add one for the GOP HOW ABOUT SOME PEOPLE AIN'T HUMAN. One of the main things that people are missing about health care is its cause of loss of jobs in this country. We are spending 50% more than any other country in the world already which puts this country at a ecnomic disadvantage from the start and if something is not done it will destroy this country. We can't compete with other countries. Why do you think all of the manufactureing jobs have gone to other countries, I know I worked for one. The wonderfull GOP will say this is not true, wake up and look around. Most all are gone from Charlottesville and central VA. Only two that I know were here in the 60's are still here and thats because they make stuff for the military the rest are all gone, good high paying jobs that employed 1,000's of people. The other thing stupid about the GOP arguement is we are already paying for all the uninsured people thru higher hospital bills why do you think UVA charges $3.50 for a asprin. Wake up everyone can't work in service jobs. People who are against health care reform are going to kill this country and NO DOCTOR WILL BE ABLE TO REVIVE IT.

Do you ever bother to watch Fox News or do you just spout the liberal talking points. Most panel discussions on Fox News consist of people representing both the pros and cons of an issue. Of course, our President would like to make the network truly onesided by convincing and coercing Democrats not to appear. Worked well for Corzine. True, Fox does have shows in primetime that are not intended to be "news" but are opinion related, but then so do CNN and MSNBC. If Fox is so biased, why do polls show that their viewership is almost evenly divided between Democrats, Republicans and Independents? Lets give most of the American public some credit, we can listen to both sides of issues and then form our own opinions.
