We have to raise taxes and cut spending. Its like running a household you can't spend more then you make, how stupid are these politicians not to get this?! Entitlements have to cut we have too many reaching into the cookie jar they never contributed to. You get out what you put in, that's all!

Throughout the campaign, Obama complianed about the evil "Bush tax cuts for the rich". Now suddenly, he tells us that they were Bush tax cuts for everyone, especially the hard-working middle class. Isn't it funny how things change from one side of the election to the other?

We do need to raise taxes, but on everyone, not just the "wealthy", however you define it. Why? Because there is no moral justification for raising taxes solely on one group versus another. We all reap the benefits of government spending - roads, defense, education etc (although it is actually the lower income citizens that benefit the most). France just tried to stick it to the wealthy with a 75% tax, and it was found unconstitutional because, you know that part about all people being equal????

But we will also have to cut spending and reel in the debt if we are going to survive. The Democrats are actually proposing more NEW spending as part of the fiscal cliff bill, then complain that the GOP, primarily the Tea Party Caucus, won't budge on taxes! Obama decided to give all federal employees the day off on Christmas eve, and he is allowing federal workers, including the VP and members of the legislature to get a raise.(How much does all that cost us?)

If both sides continue to approach this as "my way or the highway" without willingness to find a middle ground, then we deserve the fiscal cliff. It will raise taxes on everyone, plus reduce spending drastically. And that will be the punishment for their stubborn bullheaded behavior.

Dear mom, Do You Work? Do You Employ anyone?

Why don't you demand those 'do-nothings' in Congress - including Robert Hurt - do their work? Those welfare queens in Congress are demanding high salaries, tremendous salary increase, posh benefits and huge perks from lobbyists ... and still don't get their work done ... and not even by a more-than-a-year-long deadline that they themselves set?

Do you work? If you told your boss - sorry, I can never get my work done, but I demand more pay, posh benefits, and lots of vacation time away from work - what would happen?

Why are you defending Robert Hurt and the other welfare queens in Congress?

Obama DID lower taxes for the past years - he lead argument to lower the payroll taxes that you pay - and that is one of the items the TEA Party Republicans refuses to discuss.

It was the Democrats that controlled both houses demanded an expiration date on the Bush tax cuts.
Despite numerous warnings from President Bush to congress that the housing market was doomed to fail; the democrat controlled congress and news media claimed it was too big to fail.

Too bad we don't have a president that is EVER held accountable for HIS own sinking ship. It's called LEADERSHIP, something he has repeatedly shown he is incapable of managing. Our nation's problems require far more than good campaigning and "spin." What good can possibly come of a nation that borrows half of what it spends--and in TOTAL denial of the problem? God help us all.

Both sides have proven without a doubt they are totally incompetent. They realize that it can not continue the way it is but refuse to make it right. For those of you who think taxes MUST be raised, it is truly a crying shame that you are allowed to vote. Barry says he is cutting spending 1 trillion dollars over ten years while giving us 12 trillion more in debt. Not being the sharpest knife in the drawer even I can see that is a blatant lie that even the dullest of us can see. How bout cutting the give away programs, start with cell phones then go from there. Virginia voted for him, it's a sad day for the USA.

Absolutely. He also told us that raising taxes with a weak economy made NO sense, back when the economy was far STRONGER than it is now. This fight is NOT about the well-being of our nation or economic growth. It is ALL about POLITICS and who will be blamed. It's all Mr. Obama knows how to do. When this country defaults, it will be THE PRESIDENT who will be squarely blamed for playing games instead of being the competent leader we so desperately need now.

ABSOLUTELY, LET'S GET RID OF FOOLISH GIVEAWAYS THAT ARE UNPRODUCTIVE OR COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE:

get RID of EVERY $2000 HAMMER,$10,000 TOILET SEAT, etc in the DEFENSE BUDGET

get RID of EVERY plane, tank, ship, vehicle, drone, device, etc that does more to support defense contractors' posh lifestyles than to support ACTUAL DEFENSE OF THE NATION AND THE CONSTITUTION

get RID of EVERY missile, missile silo, missile technicians that are outmoded and dangerous to have around

etc

get RID of EVERY TAX LOOPHOLE FOR EVERY BUSINESS PAYING ANY EXECUTIVE MORE THAN $250,000. IF THE THE BUSINESS IS SMART ENOUGH TO PAY AN EXECUTIVE THAT MUCH, THEY NEED TO BE SMART ENOUGH TO SURVIVE WITHOUT A SINGLE TAX LOOPHOLE

ETC

ONCE UPON A TIME,
THE BRITISH HAD THE big island of Australia to ship off the crooks, thieves, violent offenders, deadbeats, debtors, and miscreants.

We should set aside a big part of the Alaska tundra to send crooks, thieves, violent offenders, deadbeats, debtors, and miscreants.

That could include
- anyone past due on any debt (credit card, mortgage, loan, etc)
- anyone convicted of any violence (including spouse abuse, sexual assault, mis-use of guns, etc)
- any deadbeat past due on spousal support or child support payments, etc
- any crook or thief (including Wall Street bankers who mis-use funds, anyone scamming or defrauding anyone, etc)

How about that?

You sound frustrated and angry. You need to be in anger management or therapy. Don't worry, if you can't afford it, the middle class will pay for it.

this is the opposite party's excuse when all rational debate is blocked in congress

then when something does get passed they complain about the president's meddling in congressional negotiations (i.e. their job)
