Come on now, 70 years old? I bet they don't require any health screenings, do they? My bus driver was at least 80 when I was in elementary school and drove like a maniac. Thank goodness no ones kids were hurt.:/

But this is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

Actually they do require health screens and I bet most 70 year olds today are healthier than us, the younger generation. 70 is not too old to drive. Bless his heart and may he rest in peace. My heart goes out to his family.

With the increasing age for social security benefits, you'll see more of this. We can't all be Walmart greeters.

I don't think that group has been effected yet as it just the baby boomers who are getting theirs now. I believe the date is 1964 so its to soon yet.

I knew a 25 year old hardwood installer that died of a heart attack. While a person who is advanced in age should be screened, being older doesn't mean that they aren't fit to drive a school bus.

FAA says 60 is tops for flying a commercial plane.

They may have a good policy.

These old bus drivers need to retire!! All these old drivers need to take a drivers test and a doctors clean bill of health to continue to drive 70 and over' To many elderly are killing people or causing accidents. I am a bus driver and I had to take a physical exam each year and pass with a clean bill of health including eye exams.

Maybe if people got of govt asstance and would stle for job that is thankless and not well paid, older peole who do it for the love of the kids would not have to. at least he was paying attenting to th road and not texting which kills far more people. if you kwew this man maybe you would not be so heartless. it was an unexpected thing.

Reise more kids adults maybe even you texting kill more people every ay

You had better retire then. I'm guessing your 90!

God bless Mr. Heddings and may he rest in peace. That being said, I absolutely feel it's not appropriate for a 70-year old to be transporting students on a school bus. In my county, we had a SPED bus driver who was 83 years old. One morning he dropped off the students at school, then was taken to the hospital because he didn't feel well, and there he died. He was a wonderful man, but he should not have been driving a school bus. I can appreciate that many seniors either can't afford to stop working or simply don't want to be sitting at home all day. But please, if you must work let it be something where other lives are not in your hands.

I'm glad none of the students on the bus were injured, however, I'm sure it was a scary experience. My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.

You people are ridiculous. I know many older people who drive buses. It could happen to 25 year old. You just never know.

To NBC/29: It truly is unfortunate that this person died during this event. That said, it is NOT a Sheriffs Department, it is a Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff is an elected position in Virginia. A Sheriff's Department is an arm of some Cities or Countys such as L.A. County. Please make an effort to remove the word Department from ANY Sheriff's Office that your Station may report on that is stationed in VA.
