Gotta pay for those additional schools, roads, police and fire protection that these people expect. Those expenses which were created when these homeowners built their McMansions.

Just discovered that my neighbor's house is only 625 sq. ft. less than my house, but is appraised 380,700 less. Property is same and my neighbor's house is 100% completely updated/renovated. My house is 100% original from 1992.

There is too much room for "good ole boy politics" in reappraisals. If you know someone downtown or are a property developer the folks tend to leave your taxes where they were. File for a hearing and ask exact details on how the evaluation was figured. You may be surprised to hear terms like "drive by evaluation" or "neighborhood evaluation". The actual field appraisers only report what they "think" they see like counting half basements as full basements and counting cathedral ceilings as two floor space. Demand hearings and full disclosure.

The new appraisal on my house is lower by about 6.5%, so at least the appraisers were realistic. If they hold millage rates the same or reduce them, Iím going to pay less in property taxes

Tax reform would bring in more money than raising taxes. There are developers out there who are still paying rates on what the property was worth fourty years ago. People have "weekend farms" that get farm exemptions just because they have a John Deere, two horses, and a barn. Current value vs. current use re-evaluation could bring in the extra needed money.

We will see. Time will tell. I believe that NC has a windfall law.
