Hello, my family and I are moving to Port Charlotte next week. I was curious about which schools are best for younger kids, where are good places to meet new people. Fun things to do in the area? Any information you could offer would be helpful!

Lots of good schools in Kansas, the Dakotas, Connecticut and such. Oh, you mean here in Charlotte County, just kidding…

From experience (one in college and one in 1st grade, both through and in Charlotte County schools), you get out of the school what you put in to the school. I think if you look at the schools as a tax supplied day care, then you will have a problem with the schools. If you look at the schools as an extension of you teaching your children, then you will like schools. I seem to think the schools here are good. I think the schools give all the resources needed for a student thrive.

My daughter attended Liberty Elementary school for kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd grade. HER TEACHERS(Mrs. Soberay & Mrs. Maggio)were fantastic. My husband and I worked with her teachers to make going to school a positive experience.

I don't recommend this school if you have special needs children. I have seen teachers tackle special needs children right outside the school, and right across the street from where I used to live. The incident stopped traffic on Atwater St.

Some elementary schools were year round schools, if I recall corrctly.

Liberty is an Amazing school especially for students with disabilities. It is the home school for the county's emotionally and behaviorally disturbed students, and the teachers for that program do an excellent job. You must have seen a rare occurance of a "take down" but I assure you those are only done when students put themselves or others in danger. I'm glad you had positive experiences with your own students.

In one incident the "teacher" tackled the student so hard I can still hear the sound of his head hitting the ground. He was slowly backing away from the teacher, and she seemed to just freak out. He wasn't posing a danger. Don't blame the student there, Julie. The other incident, which stopped traffic on Atwater St., was so violent it looked as if a brawl was going on. The poor student was literally picked up by 3 "teachers" and carried back to the school screaming.

I just enrolled my daughter into Neil Armstrong. Is it really a bad school? From what I've seen they aren't very good at the dismissal part of the day. I just moved here from Connecticut.

Your really considering moving to a Police State?
You will find their are two Florida's. One that you see when you visit, and the second when you move her, and discover your mistake.
Look else where if you have children, unless you want them to grow up and call this place home.

Daily Horoscope for January 3

Aries

There is a strong focus on career and parental matters today. You need to be cautious regarding your dealings with someone in authority - things may not be what they seem. This is also a good day to spend time with your partner. Communication in general should prove to be smoother sailing than usual so this would be an opportune time to discuss delicate matters with others. Good news in the evening is indicated.
