If minimum wage should be a living wage, why not make it $25 or $30 per hour and just cure poverty overnight?

Does he really think raising the min wage to $9. an hr is going to create jobs when Companies aren't hiring at the present minimum wage? Obama needs to think before he speaks.

As a small business owner, to afford $9 per hour, I would have to lay off some people to pay others. At this point, I am barely able to keep my doors open. This would mean either lay offs or I shut down.

All we need to do is to raise the min. to $50 per hour then everyone would be making at least $100,000 per year.

Poverty solved! Then we tax everyone at 50% and the national debt is solved.

A blinding glimpse of the obvious

The minimum wage has been raised many times, always by the Democrats, always obstructed by the Republicans Party and The Chamber of Commerce. This has always stimulated the economy by creating more buying power by the consumer. The leaders of business has increased their earnings over the worker by 400 percent. Screw business and more power to "The People". Also, tax the Guts out of them.

It still comes to basic economics where you raise wages you will raise inflation so the problem is the inflation of goods the wages vs goods and inflation debt is the problem. IE in 1972 gas was only what 70 cents a gallon bread was 20cents a loaf and wages were only on union scale around 10 to 11 an hour MAX

Let me say again, business is making record profits while the Middle Class is shrinking and lower class is increasing. Gas was .70 cents a gallon, a barrel of oil was $12. A barrel of oil is now $110 a barrel and gas is $3.80 per gallon. Oil companies are making Billions in profits. We have been and still are in a Reagan/Bush trickle down economy. Think of business peeing down on you and laughing.

Jack, also the last time that gasoline was .60 cents a gallon, minimum wage was around $3.00/hr.. so your points are mute... If minimum wage raises to 9.00/hr, Inflation will destroy what little economy we have left..... I have watched you post over a few politically charges subjects here and your opinions are drifting and drifting so far off kilter, I am starting to think you may actually be President Obama himself!

It has been proven over and over that every time a company is saddled with more fees/higher taxes/rate increases, it is passed directly.to.the end consume, and also effected their work force in negative ways... Obama's mindset is still that if you throw enough money at the problem it will go away, and that is very far from the truth

You might think its a communist idea but...if wepassed laws that stated the highest paid employee of a company , including bonuses and other wages can not make more than 100 times that of the lowest paid employee of the same company then we would be taking seriouse steps to curb inflation, and if we actually care about job creation? We need to bust open nafta tax items made in the us less and imports more, and for goodness sake we need to protect the bread baskets and give all our LOCAL farms some support and try to back off from all these coorporate foods.

Costs of living go up long before minimum wage ever goes up. Every time without fail. That's just how it works. Once again, the cost of living across the country has gone WAY up with no increase in pay. So saying that raising the minimum wage will hurt the economy is a "moot" point, not "mute" as the dimwit above stated. It simply increases buying power as the cost of living once again raises until the new minimum wage is no longer sufficient. And so the cycle continues. Now, I'm of the opinion that a jump to $9 an hour seems a bit rash and perhaps 8.25ish would be a lil more palatable to businesses and workers alike. I'm no economist but I do know history. History has proven my and disproved the opponents point time and again.

No, communism or even socialism is not this big evil we as Americans have been brainwashed into believing. Americans shudder at the terms but less than 25% know a thing about them. Honestly, I'd bet the percentage is even lower.

this is a republican answer to everything. when the minuim wage goes up..prices will rise to cover the wage increaser...the poverty wage level will rise....so before and after the wage increase it will be the same

You know who is hurt in this scenario? The middle class, the poverty line moves up, the cost of products moves up to match it, the middle class stays stagnant, therefore it destroys the middle class... That is exactly what is wrong with this country, why strive to be better when they are going to provide for the low life lazy a**es. Just the same?
