Probably because they allow pets to die...the fish looked horrible last time I went in and half of them were floating. The hamsters were eating each other and there were dead ones in the case, half the time there's no food or water, the dogs have to sit in the kennels all day and night and to get them out and play with them u have to pay now which is ridiculous because it was providing them some exercise and a lil bit of an escape from that cage. It was pretty bad last time I went. I left and cried. I also contacted the humane society and showed them picz I took with my cell phone. Maybe they finally investigated and saw what I did.

Good for you. I remember the horrors of the pet store that used to be in the mall. I have never gone in a pet store and never will. They should be outlawed.

Thanks... I wish I'd never went. I just know my daughter likes looking at pets and I thought it'd be nice to take her through there, but I had to make her leave because of the stuff I saw and it was disturbing to me. She was only 2 at the time, imagine if she would have saw the hamsters eating each other? I like PetSmart, but I got a hamster from them and it died just outside the 14 day guarantee so my daughter has a broken heart and I'm afraid to get her another.:(

I managed a pet store before and had to quit. As much as you try and get them out to exercise, it's still not right. I have held small dogs all night feeding them Nutrical and trying to get them back from a long flight all the way from kansas. they put them in a crate at like 4am and they are in it until around midnight the next day. some of the smaller pups just couldn't take it. I think they should be illegal. and that's coming from the inside!

How horrible! Pet store dogs are often the products of horrific circumstances and are usually so disturbed they have life long behavioral problems and often end up in shelters because of it.

In certain parts of the country, especially the north east, people will not buy from pet stores and breeders and there are actually shortages of adoptable dogs. There are several groups in West Virginia that transport dogs from West Virginia to areas where there's a need.

Missouri is the puppy mill capital of the world but every time someone tries to outlaw them, the puppy mill owners fight it because it's such a lucrative business. The suffering of the animals is unimaginable. The only way to stop is to not buy from pet stores anywhere!

Don't support any pet store! Don't buy their products or their animals! Then they will go out of business and puppy mills will follow.

Do you live in SF? I used to live there. I could never get used to the weather though. My son lives in CA. I visit him often.

The people in California are amazingly diligent about controlling animal abuse and I think puppy mills are illegal there. My son wanted to adopt a dog and the adoption fees were so incredibly high he couldn't afford it. They charge so much to support animal rescue efforts and to keep from giving an dog to any idiot who shows up. He's back in school getting his masters right now and laid off and looking for a job, but those people wanted hundreds in adoption fees.

Cat Bird, you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! We should start a group to get the puppy mills and pet stores stopped! I mean there's the humane society but it's gonna take a group of people, gathering evidence and fighting the right. I'll do what I can from my end, I can always sneak and take picz. lol. I have a friend who does animal rescue and that's where I've gotten all my pets but the cat I got at the shelter, and the hamster I got at petsmart.

I agree that Petland was a horrible place for dogs. I actualy bought a mini pin from thme because its conditions were terrible and its now a very happy (and spoiled brat).

I almost cried everytime I went in the store. It's sad seeing bulldogs in tiny pens.

But, does anyone know the legit reason they closed? I read that in April their supplier sued them becaus ethey owed them over $7k

The one and only time I went to Petland was to buy superworms for our beardies...when the lady brought the containers out, they were cold. I asked y they were cold n she said they live longer when refrigerated because it slows their bodies down. Kinda made sense...but after walking thru the store with them for a few minutes I noticed none were moving n I asked again if they were dead. She said no, they just needed to warm to room temperature. Should've known better! Darn things were dead!! Beardies wouldn't eat them - wasted a few bucks n my time. So sad the way ALL the animals were treated there. N ur right about the poor dogs n cats...all 3 of my kids wanted to pet n play with them. Think they were charging like $5 each?!

Every year the humane society introduces legislation to outlaw puppy mills and it's always defeated. You have to remember that our long time senate president and acting governor's family has gotten to be rich off of animal abuse. The Tomblin's kennels are subsidized with hundreds of thousands of tax payer dollars so they can torture and kill greyhounds.

Those animals live under brutal circumstances and have short brutal lives after which they are destroyed and dumped.

Other states, like in the northeast, are so progressive with their pet protection laws that there is a shortage of adoptable pets because of strict spay and neuter laws.

In West Virginia, however, there are little if any animal cruelty laws. This is a backward state that will soon have a governor named "Earl Ray" whose family is paid by tax payers to torture dogs.

So you tell me how hard of a job the humane society has in this state.

It's a hard battle in this sewer of a state.

I didn't know all of that. I know that the humane society is trying hard to protect animals, but didn't know exactly what was stopping them. It's terrible how money is more important to most then animals.

I'm not blaming anyone in particular. I only mentioned Tomblin to illustrate how backward this state is when it comes to animal protection.

But things are getting better. The humane society is very active here and has a lot of support. Plus there are several private animal welfare organizations run and supported solely by individuals who donate their own time and money to help abused and neglected animals.

Don't ever step foot in a store that sells live animals and that will be a start. Then track W.Va. animal welfare through the humane society and contact your representatives when legislation is introduced.

Every little bit helps. Here is information about the West Virginia Humane Society. http://humanewatch.org/index.php/people/detai...

My organization tried to close Petland for years due to their policy on baby parrots and birds in general.

The problem was that it's a franchise out of Chillicothe Ohio, and the owners rarely abided by the rules set by Petland. We also feel that Petland didnt care anyway or they'd have closed many stores down to begin with. All they're interested in is money.

Petland is a BLIGHT on the pet industry! They shouldn't be allowed to do business ANYWHERE.

I have a question for you cat bird. Isn't there something that can be done about the trapping of bears just because one walks through a persons yard, or crosses their path? I know they aren't pets and are dangerous, but they are animals too and running out of places they CAN go. I read a story on a news site today that got my blood boiling about how a woman got a bear trapped because it was pooping in her yard, and then she left it some toilet paper. WHAT? First u uproot an animal just cuz it's walking through the yard, probably because someone is leaving something out that he/she has been eating, and then ya make fun of the poor thing? ahhhh
