From what I've seen posted you can't help them. So if I was you, I would just let it be.

What does someone do about squatters moving in next door? The house hasn't been lived in for 5 year and is falling about. They have no water or power. They are filth. The people are filth. The owner of the house passed away.
When you said "Squatters", I thought you were talking about a family of hillbilles who moved in from the Holler that didn't know what an indoor bath room was all about and was squatting in their back yard where every one could see. I was going to tell you to give them some real toilet paper and teach them hygene, but now that I know, I can't help you.

The answer to this question is easy. Have the homeowners get together and form a neighborhood association who in turn hires an armed security company that patrols the neighborhood.

Squatters who say they take care of themselves?

By trespassing and useing items that don't belong to them, and you know they gotta eat from someplace whether it be things people PUT IN THEIR HOME trash or at restaurant trash - or yeah - the free places in town to eat?

No money, no food and shelter - and they take care of themselves? How do their kids go to school. CPS needs called in.

Working homeowners can really get hurt helping the poor. How about if they fall on your property and try to take everything you have?? How about if you come up missing small items, not sure if you had seen them last before the strangers entered.

And child pedophiles -?? around your kids maybe - it's bad enough that trusted friends may be one - but taking a chance on a stranger too? YOU are responsible for your family - that is not "watching" over them to allow strangers access to them...

I am compassionate and I help people but kind of at a distance. In public in a store when someone gets more food than they have money or stamps - sometimes I'll pay - On way to work - see someone with sign HUNGRY - stop and carefully hand them my lunch and pull away, someone broke down - go call 911 - many things you can do without HANDS ON.

Go to a homeless shelter and work for free or a food kitchen, that helps the poor - give clothes to the free stores that then give them to the poor - many ways to care and not endanger your life or your children's...

Call the cops and tell them you smell a weird smell coming from the abandoned house next door.

Pastor Mike should invite all those hungy people to a meal daily at his church. That's what churches are for. The regular family is endangering their homes, belongings, and loved ones by allowing people they don't know to run in and out. I too used to give srangers rides, food, cigarettes an yep - quite often things were missing from my car and home/yard. They will case you out re: livng alone - type of doors and windows you have.

I think the hungry are helped. HUD - food stamps, SSI CHECKS for old and disabled - WELFARE for children up to five years old and ALL MEDICAL FREE. Taxpayers do take care of the homeless but it's dangerous to do it one on one. There are homeless shelters, churches who give free food - many ways besides "bumming the regular JOHN DOE who works for a living and has full responsibility for his own family/business".

Can't count times I've given my lunch to homeless when on way to work - a cigarette - a quarter, etc. so it's not that I don't care!!! It's scary now folks. These houses that squatters move into are filled with rats, roaches, possums - many things that can hurt children - IT WOULD NOT BE NICE to allow people to continue living like that without water and a way to keep cool or warm - "think".
Excellent, thoughtful response!

I'm sorry if people are getting upset about this post. But I was trying to see what could be done. I do help people when I can. But I support myself and just able to make it. I know that there are people out there that really needs help, I have giving them food and rides. It just makes me sad when I see people using others when that won't help themselves. I'm sure many have been in hardship at one time or another and we did what we has to do to.. if it was scrubbing floors, cutting grass or working any job we could fine. I know I have. And there is nothing work with asking for help.

"poor" - uh 3 rooms and a path - father worked garden and hunted for meat? Wore big shoes with paper in them so they'd last a few years.

Well in my day kids got paper routes, collected pop bottles, picked berries and sold them, etc. EVEN THOUGH the more 'NOT SO POOR' kids at school ridiculed them as they were given money daily. Also neighbors who gave clothes to our family then laughed and told others where the "new rags" came from. Oh Yes I cry when I hear Dolly Parton sing "Coat of many Colors"

Worked over 38 years, sometimes two jobs and never ever bummed - although a time or two people just stepped in and gave "on their own". I definitely remember what it is to be poor PASTOR MIKE - poor but proud - raised to not bum, not pity yourself, to give a days work for a day of pay,- even walk to work if you have no other way - raised to have compassion for the "more poor", the handicapped and to respect and help elders. Helping people across the street, giving up your seat on the bus.

You can't help the poor who won't help themselves. You simply enable them in their lifestyle of not getting a job. Every now and then a person may get down and out, but if he/she has tried - that's the person who deserves help. And chldren not properly taken care of need taken by CPS. This is not even counting the a SQUATTER drug addicts and drunks. It goes on and on.

There is always a need for "cleaning services", work in restaurants and stores, etc.- maybe not high dollar but A JOB - Health Right gives free health care for low income. Proof of a stove - you get food stamps - NO HOME - you qualify for low income housing/HUD - living in rundown homes with no utilities and food, etc. is inhumane to those you are responsible for. ON YOUR OWN? THEN GO for it - don't drag your family into your way...
