The Cabell County Board of Education stated that the low income families are the biggest part of the problem. Yes, there are exceptions at any income level, but most of the trouble comes from the bums who are too lazy to work or teach their own children. Year round schooling will only add to the obesity problem, because it takes away time in the warm months when the kids can actually get outside and play.
Why don't you go and get a job and stop being jealous of people who actually work and have something?

This is probably a good idea, considering how our education system ranks against other countries.

I didn't say that. You might have read that, but I definitely didn't say it - never mind all those little "extras" you threw in there. I'm saying that money DOES NOT mean everything, but parents (lower or higher-income) SHOULD make their kids their top priority. Too bad that many lower income are spending their time and their money or something else!

My children will be punished because they will lose the biggest part of their summer. This is the time when they can get outside and play and when our family takes our vacations. Yes, we care about vacations because we work hard and value that time we can get away together. Our family does not utilize private day care and summer programs, but we do spend time educating our own children. You have to get up off the couch and work with them or they will never succeed in school. Our public education is wonderful and my children do well in it because I am involved with their education. It only appears to be a bad system because we have so many welfare families in this state that simply don't care about their childen's educations.
You are showing your ignorance well, a lot of low income families are single parent homes.. the one parent works two jobs to support his/her family so they value the time they get to spend with their child/children when they get a free day. Have you ever thought of that? Don't dare say well it is their fault they are a one parent family because it is not in 95% of cases. This doesn't mean they don't teach their child/children during the summer it means they don't have all the time a two parent family does! So I guess being a single parent and busting your butt to provide for your family makes you a "bad parent"?? I don't think so, it makes you a damn good parent for not being a cry butt like others because you got handed a deck of cards you were not expecting to ever have to play! When there was year round school here in Charleston than they went 12 weeks was off 4 weeks they still got holiday breaks and weekends and they always had a month in the summer, so you my dear can still take your valued family vacation, you and your family will just have to take it within that month they get off during the summer! The way I see it if you don't like it homeschool, put your child in private school or move the hell out of state but beware a lot of states have year round school. I beleive your just upset because it would interrupt your schedule of having to teach your children year round instead of 2 1/2 months out of the year in which I highly doubt you teach your children anything other than tv and video games. You may want to research the definition of a bad parent vs a good parent!! Stop slamming low income people as you are living in one of the highest poverty states in the U.S, again don't like it move!! No one is holding your family hostage here. You should put all your negativity about low income families and turn it into positives of how to prevent school shootings and teachers sexually assualting the children. Btw my child will NEVER go to a public school or any school for that matter in WV as someone said we are pretty much dead last in education. They are homeschooled that way I know they are recieving a proper education and are on or above their level which as of now they are above their level and I value all my time with my children everyday not just during vacations as you do! So please stop showing your stupidity on here and realize low income does not equal bad parents!! Judgmental ignorant parents equal bad parents!!

No one is "dealt a deck of cards". You make your own life and people should think about that before they get themselves into situations. If being a single parent means a person has no time for their child, and is therefore a bad parent, then they should have thought about that before having a child. It is their fault they are in that situation because of the decisions they have made. I spend plenty of time with my children and their education comes first. I don't want my children to grow up and be like the people around here, like you, that blame the school system for their own faults. We have a very good school system and excellent teachers, but unfortunately, they don't have much to work with because the bum parents don't stress the importance of education at home. This is my home and I should not have to move just because the lazy people ruin it for the rest of us. Once again, statistics show that it is the low income families causing the problems, which proves that most bad parents fall within that category.

Steve why even argue and lower yourself? People are not going to listen, they have their mind set that low income automatically equals drugged up, drunk parents who don't give two cents about their children!! Funny thing is when I went to school more of the higher income kids were the ones failing, drugged up, drunk, and dropping out because they could afford all these things and a lot of girls were pregnant before hitting 10th grade yet again they were from high income families not low income..another funny thing and this came from a girl that goes to GW said there are 38 including herself were pregnant (this was about 2 months ago), now we all know most kids that go to GW are very high income students!! I just wonder how many are knocked up from the teacher that was caught sleeping with his students?? Pregnancy promices to each other is what is causing this and over 75% of these "high income children" will drop out of school and never go back. So don't even lower yourself to people that act like they are better than others because those types are the ones that usually have skeletons in their closet that is bulging at the hinges!!

So you work two jobs AND homeschool? If that is the case, there is NO WAY I believe your kids are advanced in their education - not unless you never, ever sleep.

I never said I worked two jobs AND homeschooled my children, I was just saying in general. Please re-read as no where in my post did I even insinuate that. I do homeschool I do NOT work two jobs, I am NOT a single parent either as I said I was speaking in general for single parents and low income families. So YES my children are advanced above their grade leve,l because YES I do homeschool them, do not assume something you don't know. Thank You

OK - so maybe I did misread it, but you can take your panties out of a knot now. I just think the person who started this thread has a point. I've known countless low-income families whose children are sadly lacking and NOT because their parents don't have money, but because they CHOOSE to spend what they do have foolishly - beer, cigarettes, and worse. That is not fair to their children. They can't seem to feed their kids nutritiously, but they can smoke? Drink? It's disgusting really when you get right down to it, and kids CANNOT absorb what they need to learn at school if they are HUNGRY. This is not directed at you or even at all low-income families because I know it isn't true of all, but you know as well as I do that it is true of MANY - too many!

My panties were never in a knot, but high income or medium income families have the same problem they are just not called out!! Yes I 100% agree children need to be first no matter how much money you make, no parents shouldn't drink, smoke or do drugs if they can't afford to feed their children in the real world no parent should be doing any of these things to start with! To the person from Ravenswood, sorry I am not paying to much attention to my grammer and spelling on here but if that's the only thing you can say when the important issue here is our children than so be it. Have a nice night

You know I went back and looked over my post and there are like one or two mistakes, sad that's what "just saying" is really worried about. I am glad that this person has the time to be topix grammer police, when this person puts periods before a sentence even begins. LMAO sorry had to do it! But it's not about that it's about our children, their education, and how all families regardless of income have bad seeds in them.
