Future Of Coal

Coal has about 15 years. West Virginia needs to invest in agriculture.

I agree, it will continue to decline, and they should quit worrying about these temporary jobs and move to something more steady.

Correction, there are Coal reserves in the U.S. that will last 500 years. Coke comes from Coal that is used to make Steel, as long as steel is used, Coal will be in demand. Most Coal mined in W.Va. is exported to foreign Countries to make steel. The decline of Coal is due to the use of natural gas to run electrical generating plants other than dirty Coal. Coal is dirty, nasty, filthy and the use for generating electricity is killing our environment and our people. When you hear Coal Company spokesmen and their paid politicians tell you how Coal is good for you, just think about the Tobacco Industry spokesmen and their paid Politian's saying how good Tobacco was for you. Those that say "I Love Coal" also loves Chemical, Nuclear and Toxic waste.

Look at the recent Thread on Charleston Topi -- "Truth?"--. That could be a college course on this subject. Someone like Coal Tattoo should re-print some of that stuff.
Here is something I just ran across on gas prices.
An Yes links that begin in youtube are pretty safe to click as that stuff goes thru Google who scans them for bad things ...

Just how much of what WVa spends does come from Coal Taxes ...
I wonder -- could we start taxing LARGE landowners VERY heavily to start other industries ... Even IF the current owners wanted out and sold -- SOMEBODY would have to pay the tax .... IF the current owners couldn't sell -out

We certainly should start trying to be prepared and I hope our politicians are thinking about a possibility without coal. If we have a couple of big storms hit a media center like NY City, how much heat would the coal industry take (even if it was just a coincidence and global weather changes aren't true).
Do I remember England went from maybe 200 coal mines to 6 mines in maybe a decade?

If you stop burning coal the electricity cost will skyrocket. My local coop states that the average monthly residential electric bill would be $1,000.00 And there is a lot more then 15 years worth of coal. There is at this very moment a brand new coal fired generating plant being built in southern Arkansas. Do you really believe the electric companies would build a brand new plant when it wouldnt have any coal to fire it? I dont know how long a coal fired plant last before its wore out. however the SWEPCO plant near Gentry in NW Ar. has been in operation for 25 years.

Folks will sometimes walk away from paid for land if the taxes become to high. In arkansas there are thousands of propertys for sale in fulton & sharp counties the The unpaid real estate and SID taxes are more than the market value of the land. You can get on the Arkansas commisioner of state lands website. look on the negotiated sales list for each county. Those pages are the property that was up for public auction and didnt recieve any bids.

conservative/republican/fascis t. all that in one person. conservative-disposed to preserve existing conditions and to resist change. that means a conservative in the US would be one who basically is a Constitutionalist, wanting to govern the US by the Constitution of the US. that aside, fascist-one who believes in fascism. fascism-a totalitarian governmental system led by a dictator, emphasising aggressive nationalism and often racism. How can one be a conservative fascist in the US, according to those definitions. a conservative in nazi Germany was a nazi. not too hard to figure. a conservative in mussolini's Italy was a fascist. a conservative in the US is constitutionalist. remember a conservative is a believer in the status quo. a conservative in Viet Nam is a communist. an American conservative fascist is a contradiction according to the definition. Hmmm, Americans are getting smarter everyday. that last sentence is sarcasm in case any fail to pick up on it.

So IF the Large land is now already Owned. Say taxing large holdings of mineral and timber holdings has to raise money. Unless the companies try and declare bankruptcy and many of the companies are multi-nationals and couldn't. If they sell the new owners would owe. We DO NOT make the law say the state gets the land if there is non payment - we say there must be payment - the company is liable down to its' last dollar ! We'll go after the money wherever the companies headquarters is.

But - but - but
I'm a Christian Nation.
(I mean there aren't many Indians left and the Jews, Muslims, Agnostic etc. don't count TO ME).
"But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg".-Thomas Jefferson
"The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from the New Testament as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's condensed composition is especially notable for its exclusion of all miracles by Jesus and most mentions of the supernatural, including sections of the four gospels which contain the Resurrection and most other miracles, and passages indicating Jesus was divine..

Right now there are no laws allowing the goverment to go after the owners of tax deliquent land. your solution would require a whole new set of laws and a bigger goverment to enforce the laws. Only new offenders could be punished. Old offenders are counstitionally protected fron Ex Post Facto Law,s. Your solution would cost more to implement and prosecute than it would generate in revenue. The fact is we never really own our land even when its debt free. My wife who by the way is part native american, She has been telling me for decades If its you land wht must you pay rent(taxes). And someone else gets to tell you how much the rent will be? She believes the five civilized tribes wouldnt never been removed and forced to walk the trail of tears if they had been paying property taxes. and those Large land owners you wish to punish for being successful they have lobbist that keep things like your idiotic scheme from ever becoming law.
