If you read the story she DIDN'T HAVE A PRESCFRIPTION for the drugs. I think all government city snd county employees should be drug tested. How many teachers have been arrested lately for drugs(several). They are put in control of our children and should be held accountable for their actions.

Yeah as I teacher I'd be fine with bein drug tested but before I do so I want all of the moochers who receive welfare tested as well. I'm sure our state/country would save a lot of money. My tax dollars are paying for so many who are abusing the system so spend my tax dollars drug testing them

I hope you are not one of my children's teachers. YEAH? With being a teacher I would hope you would be more educated, calling people you don't even know moochers? Only a non educated person needs to resort to name calling. NO WAY you are a teacher, if so I'd be ashamed to come back on here and admit it.

A little harsh maybe i was. But what's the big deal about drug testing welfare recipients? I apologize because there are people who need the support. I was there once. However, i stand on what I stated. If you receive assistance then you should be required to take a drug test. If you receive assistance an you are clean no big deal just like its no big deal for teachers, law enforcement, coal miners, etc to take one.:)

Here is my opinion on it and you know what they say about opinions? LOL I am not a recipient but I would never judge someone without knowing the situation to assume welfare recipients are moochers. There is several questions I ask myself before coming to my opinion on this.

1. Can this state afford to drug test every recipient?
2. Who controls this?
3. What do we then do with the results.
4. Who will decide the punishment if someones test shows drugs.
5. More important to me is if a parent is found to have dirty urine, does only the adult pay the price or will children suffer?

Truth is I'm not a drug user, nor do I drink. Those tests are meant to find out if that person does drugs so we can kick them out of the program. I honestly believe we got more people in this country drinking, then using drugs. So we care so much if cash/food stamps is being used to purchase drugs we should test for it, however I can assure you we got just as many if not more using them to purchase alcohol and cigarettes. Or spending their money on them, therefore needing the food stamps to feed the kids. This brings us to the more serious point on the issue.

If we drug test the adults with children in the household and find weed or other drugs in their system, what is the guidelines? Remove the assistance in that house for an extended period of time. Well this means we got children going to bed hungry or not getting medical care, because they don't have medical insurance or food stamps.

I don't use drugs, however I'm starting to feel it might be better to legalize weed in this state. Our jails is filling up with these people, when we got drunks all over the road. A person can walk into a gas station in West Virginia and purchase alcohol which in my opinion is more dangerous then weed when driving a car. This is another topic altogether I know. But this is my point. We want to find out and toss out those that use weed/drugs but do nothing about those recipients that abuse alcohol. I know and been around plenty of people that smoked weed. I've never seen one so high they passed out or couldn't control their bodies, like I've seen someone drunk. And please before it starts I'm not saying I'm for getting high, but I'm not for drunks being on the roads or taking care of helpless children or using my tax dollars for that either.

You mentioned teachers, law enforcement and coal miners being tested. Well yes they should be, I send my children to school I deserve to know if a drug addict is teaching them. With that type of judgement I'd be worried about them giving it to my child. Sure people in those positions should be tested. They are in trusted positions. Honestly the man next door smoking weed everyday living on welfare, is not in a trusted position with myself nor my children. Now the alcoholic right down the road that I know for a fact sells food stamps or trades them for more beer then drinks and drives, yes I worry about him. One of these days his food stamps bought beer is going to kill someone.

At the end of the day we need to worry about the innocent people that will pay the price for the drug tests and punishments for being caught with dirty urine. The kids. Then what do we do? Take the children from the houses because of drug use? WOW we cant do this, we don't have enough foster homes in WV to place. We don't have enough people in WV to adopt them if it ends up being repeat offenders. Then we should be ashamed of ourselves for taking those children's food stamps and medical insurance while allowing others to live in drunk homes. We cant fix everything. We certainly cant afford everything. If these families lose their healthcare and then makes more bills they cant pay due to lack of insurance it will drive the cost of health care up for the rest of us to.

I don't pretend to have all the answers, in my opinion drug testing will only result in further issues we as a state can't afford.

I think one of the issues may be with the Welfare Drug testing is that let's say you test as a mandatory. Found Positive. Who suffers? The Children that go hungry....then if there is no available treatment what then? Are the kids taken away? Not enough Foster Care or other child resources. What is the recourse. I don't think they WANT to know how extensive the Drug Problem is. People turn to all kinds of "de-stressers" when they are economically challenged and don't KNOW HOW to respond to it, or make it better.

I bet you people would need prescription narcotics to deal with the punks that infest our school system too.

They've got no respect for authority, and no fear of consequence.

I feel sorry for the teachers in this state, each generation is worse than the last..and it ALL starts at home.

What kind of idiot would think they could walk into a store and return/exchange the boots they were WEARING?!?! She shouldn't have thrown them at all, justifying her idiotic behavior must mean you're just as big an idiot (or bigger) than this woman. At least she was high, what's your excuse??

A little clarification. The states that are drug testing "welfare" (that doesn't actually exist anymore) randomly, so they are not paying to test EVERY recipient. Furthermore, you need to understand that cash assistance, food assistance, medical coverage, utility assistance, etc. are all SEPARATE programs. When a recipient tests positive, they only lose the cash...not the food stamps, medical coverage, etc., so children shouldn't be starving. The programs don't target the occasional pot smokers.. They are designed to target the ADDICTS. In which case, the children aren't benefiting from the cash anyway.
As for losing the kids, that depends. If meth is found, you bet. Marijuana would more likely be referred for counseling & followed up.

I don't even know where to begin with this statement. The tests DO target pot smokers to. It's part of the urine exam. Look into Florida's results from testing so far. Its showing it cost more then projected and they so far have found less to be drug addicts then they thought they would. Thats easy to check into. Google it. I don't know where you get they will only lose cash. If this were they case the testing would ONLY be done on those getting cash. This is not true either. Random testing covers many drugs. I know in the office I worked for the average cost was $190. It's not cheap. For those states that implemented testing, research their results. Florida the example I gave hit this wide open. They have drastically cut back on the number tested. To, those tests are so easy to beat. ON here I wont go into details, but in the workplace by professionals you would be shocked at who is beating them. I don't trust the testing, nor do I trust those who will regulate it. My top concern still would be the innocent kids. What it would then cost us with healthcare rising would be more then most of us could pay. Do you honestly think this will wake them up and they will stop using drugs? NO they just get smarter and wiser at beating the tests. No way could this state do blood or hair testing. We have a very large company in WV that I know for a fact does hair testing. Every employee and perspective employee gives examples. ONLY 1 out of 15 on average gets sent off. This is a multi billion dollar company. If they can't afford it, WV can't either. This man owns many businesses, he operates them all the same. You would be shocked.

For me if I were to get a vote, instead of spending my tax dollars on testing those now on welfare I'd rather see my contribution spent on programs to prevent it. Better school programs to target those that appear to only be waiting on the age to drop out. Give to the next generation, so we don't repeat this one. College, after school programs and even peer programs in school. We could make a difference in the next generation. NO we couldn't fix it over night, but in the long run if we concentrated more on educating kids and giving them more reasons to further their education they wouldn't need welfare. Most don't go to school because they cant afford it. Take my contribution and let them further the education plz, better then giving to someone that don't need a raise. Give it to teachers or schools to help this generation of kids be different.

Just some reading on the subject from other states doing the testing so far. The program seems to spend more money then it saves. A reported 96% of those tested were negative. These programs cost more then it saves. Check into other states. Now florida says "lets test only those we think might be using" WOW talk about unfair.

If WV does this you best believe I will be the first to put on some ugly dirty clothes, not shower or clean up and walk into this place hoping they "THINK" i'm on drugs so I get tested. I will then file a suite they cant afford to pay for stero typing. WHEN I win, I will then donate that money to further education in this state. I hope WV seriously looks into the failures of this program before they leap on it.
