Want to get on as a conductor with CSX or Norfolk Southern. Is there anyone out there that can help me?

You have to work your way up from a yard or track worker to become a conductor. This has been a dream of mine for a while too, but the amount of travel you have to do starting out and not being home every night sucks.

...and time would be limited on the things I like to do on my spare time off.

I know I'd be away at least every other day. I've always wanted to be a railroader, and I'm tired of the LTL trucking industry, and I want a retirement for the old lady and I. I don't want to leave WV if at all possible. There's Dickinson, Iaeger, Kenova and Bluefield for Norfolk Southern, and Charleston, Huntington and Parkersburg for CSX. I apply at all positions, be it track worker, signal maintainer, carman or whatever. Can't seem to get an interview, and always see the dreaded Not Selected status.
