JEAL TOAL'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE ALLOWS JURISTS TO JOIN SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE
A South Carolina judicial panel has offered one of the FIRST decisions in the country regarding use of the social networking sites like "Facebook" by SC state judges.
The State Advisory Committee on Standards of Judicial Conduct ruled in early December 2009 that that a judge may be a member of "Facebook" and can be friends with law enforcement officers and employees of the Magistrate as long as they do not discuss anything related to the judge’s position as magistrate.
A check of Facebook profiles has uncovered some interesting information. Are SC judges also using State property and State internet servers and accounts for personel affairs and pleasures? According to the recent JMSC transcripts in the Segars-Andrews matter, at least we know she likely does.
Certainly this Facebook story needs more investigation. Full disclosure of internet access records and websites also accessed from the courthouse and on government servers, whether done via laptops, desktops, government cellular phones with web browsers, etc, is not exempt under the FOIA.
In November 2009, the Florida Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee barred judges from “friending” lawyers who may appear before them in court.

One Response to “SC rules on judges’ Facebook usage”

It’s all at Jean’s Toal’s arbitrary and capricious discretion anyway. Why waste time on these “committees” when the rules are clear that Toal and her 4 yes men completely control all judicial and attorney discipline? Ask Judge Segars-Andrews. She won with the Queen, then McConnell’s gang took her down. Ask the 20 members of the Bar who were gifted their licenses 2 years ago.
