Tourism can change the fabric of a city, which is why Charleston's efforts to limit cruise ship visits has become such an issue in the town.

Charleston has a ton of great things to do and see. Only town I've lived in that has History, Beaches, Great Parks, Good Weather. However, the school system is not competitive with other cities. Many parents are not concerned if their children's schools are performing well. Just check out area schools on GreatSchools.com . You'll see a few good performers but most are dismal. Seems to be why those that can afford it send their kids to private schools. Lots of history, natural beauty, but not much of a vibe of open minded thinkers -- mostly conservative, churchy types with Beiber haircuts and serious demenors, some poor folk (white and black). Most people are friendly but not much of a sense of community unless you are in enclaves on the peninsula. Additionally, fame as a charming coastal city has attracted too many people. With the build up from Boeing and other firms, the areas byways are often congested, Rent and Home Prices are far higher her than in other high ranked mid-sized cities and seem to be ever increasing with no end in sight. Think over the pros and cons before moving here. If you have a young school aged family consider elsewhere. Come back when you retire.
