The best football team that Charleston has had in the last 20 years was the 1989-1990 school year. They had a perfect 10-0 season and beat Dexter and Clayton in the playoffs before being shut out by Lutheran North 0-28. They had a very talented team that year and some awesome seniors and were led by Coach Forrest, Coach Kess, Coach Marshall, and Coach Spencer. Those boys played football with everything they had in them and produced a 3A District One Championship, a Conference Championship, and were 3A Semifinalists that year.

Seniors included: Tory Gunn, David Austin, Marcus Dixon, Leonard Corbitt, Lamont Frazier, Brian DeLay, Clay Bethune, Jim Robertson, Mickey Cox, Elliott Williams, Brad Moore, James Hamilton, Chris Gary, Myron Spencer, Wendall Lewis, and Preston Heard.

Juniors included: Jeff Pendergrass, Marshall Anderson, Demetrius Murray, Titus McCleary, Kevin Small, Fred Evans, Steven Welsh, Cortez Williams, Byron Henderson, Chris Craig, and James Cox.

Sophomores included: Jermain Coleman, Nikki Jackson, James Gardner, William Heard, Jason Forrest, Iric Farmer, and Richard Ware.

To my knowledge the only Freshman player was Steven Ledbetter.

This was back when Homecoming took weeks to prepare for. Back when teachers and students spent countless hours working on actual FLOATS for the parade. Back when the girls that were chosen as attendants looked just as pretty in their new sunday dresses riding on the back of those shiny convertibles as they did in their gowns the night of the big game. Back when EVERY single student couldn't wait to participate in the weeks activities. When students rushed to the game early just to hear the results of the judging of the floats to see if their class had taken first place for what they had worked so hard on night after night. Back when the students, teachers, and community were filled with BLUEJAY pride. Back when their were bonfires and pep rallys the night before the big game and you could hear C-C-HAR-L-L-LES-T-T-TON CHARLESTON and cow bells from miles away. These kids these days have no idea what they are missing. I wish they could be a part of something like that. Maybe then they would take a little pride in themselves and their school and one day realize that those were the days.

I miss those days. I miss the people. I miss the friendships. It breaks my heart to see how very little "most" of these kids care these days. I can't believe how much things have changed in just a small amount of time. I wish these kids could truly understand the meaning of Bleeding Blue Blood.

My question as a parent is how do we get those days back for our children before it is too late?

I would have to say the 96 season was the best. they went undefeated and beat a top ranked st louis team named John Burroughs but came up short to the eventual state champs MICDS by one in the playoffs. Take coach Kesserling off that team and nobody comes close to beating them that year!!!

Hey Blueman This is Jeff Pendergrass a member of the 89 90 football team. What do you mean take coach Kesselring of that team and nobody comes close. He is one of the best offensive line youll ever find. Do you know what it takes to be a lineman for coach Kess. I wish u had been to one of our 2a days from 89 to 91. If you would have seen how he coaches I dont think you would have anything to say about him.

Dream on rookies, none of the teams you mentioned played in an era of Bluff, Cape Central, Jackson....don't compare Malden and Caruthersville to 5A teams. A little respect please.

I was on the last team to beat jaackson & bluff and so was most of the guys on the 89 -90 team. we also played st.gen, flat river, and fredricktown. unfortunately i graduated in 89 we where good but i think the 89-90 team was the best. they had alot of players that d1 schools where watching. there was also agreat team around 83 when they still used the point system to get in the playoffs. they where beaten in the play offs by country day a private school also. the 96 team was good but charleston school was smaller and they where in a lower a class. i dont think they would have done verry well against some of early and late 80s teams.

I played on the 89-90 football team and I wholeheartedly agree with musicman. I remember wearing my letter jacket and being very proud of my school and team(I still am).
As for the Coach Kess remarks I think blueman obviously doesnt know him. He made me a way better player than I ever beleived I could be. He wasnt always PC but when your dealing with a bunch of arrogant know it all teenagers you have to be a little over the top to get their attention and respect.
By the way Jeff I have heard that you were the second best lineman in the Class of 91.Is this true?

No doubt the 89-90 team was the best to come out charleston for football. But that same year also produced the best basketball team. That same year they went 33-0 in basketball. Them teams spoiled charleston with the way they winning that school year. And the cherry on top was that the prettiest cheerleaders were cheering them on every step of the way. Whew them girls were fine.

My grandfather was on a team that went undefeated and they beat everyone by 30-40 points.....I think they only allowed one touchdown all year to Sikeston but still won 50 something' to 7

No way!!! 89 team hosted their quarterfinal game and lost In semi's... Meanwhile 96 team lost in the quarters...89 sent 4of those seniors to school, 96 sent no one, including those 3backs (Pratt, Jamison, Coleman) but they were good on offense, but corbitt to Frazier or Moore was dangerous & 89's defense was dominate!!!

Kess was indeed a great coach. Even both coach marshalls had skills. When it comes to play calling though...eh. Kess eventually let me and the qb call audibles.

I wish kess was my head coach, I would've ran for 2500 yards!!! Real talk, kess gave his backs the ball at least 20a game, at least!! I remember Daryl Clark vs Berkeley carry the ball 42times, my god it took ya 4games to get those carries with Forrest! Well I'll say this, I was a member of 1989 team & we had about 6,7 all state players on that team... Best team no doubt... Anybody else make it to semi final? Thank u
