CHARLESTON — A more than half-million dollar settlement was reached this week in a lawsuit that blamed a former Charleston police officer for failing to prevent a fatal accident almost four years ago.

Mary Brumleve sued the city of Charleston and officer Brent Butler for negligence in connection with the June 2, 2005, accident that killed her husband, Ralph Brumleve. Brumleve died at the scene and the other driver, Sherilynn J. Hughes-Cox, who was reportedly intoxicated, died four days at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Brumleve’s lawsuit alleged that Butler could have prevented the accident because he met and spoke with Hughes-Cox just before it took place and should have realized her intoxicated state meant she shouldn’t have been driving.

Butler later retired from the Charleston Police Department and is now chief deputy of the Coles County Sheriff’s Department. Hughes-Cox was the wife of Sheriff Darrell Cox.

Meeting up with another mans wife, in a rural area, in middle of the night, while intoxicated?

Does anybody else find this strange?

Just seconds after Officer Brent Butler and Darrell Cox's wife finish their business,(hmmm?), Brent Butler lets her drive off drunk to take the life of an innocent family man, Ralph Brumleve.

And then Sheriff Cox hires him as his Chief Deputy? Only in Coles County!

Audrie refused to testify because her face is all beaten up from another "attack" on her from someone else. Maybe the married man she is with now.

The city of Charleston pushed for the settlement with Mary Brumleve after they found out what was going to come out in the hearings if they didn't settle.

Pled guilty to reduced charges?...lol...just another case of this individuals actions being hidden from the public.
