LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN
COMING THROUGH CENTRAL VIRGINIA
JUNE 9
The Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run, to benefit Special Olympics Virginia, is set to come through Central Virginia, on June 9 as the runners make their way to Richmond for the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games, June 9-10.
The Torch Run begins from eight points across Virginia as over 3,000 officers will carry the Special Olympics Flame of Hope on more than 2,000 miles of Virginia¡¦s roads. The Torch Run culminates on Friday, June 9th, when law enforcement officers run the final leg of the relay into the University of Richmond's Robins Center and pass the torch to a Special Olympics athlete, who will then open the Summer Games. The Summer Games will host over 1,400 athletes for the Special Olympics, making it the largest state competition.
Presented by SunTrust Banks, Inc. and Macy¡¦s, and organized by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Virginia Department of Corrections, the Virginia Sheriff's Association, and the Virginia Association of Regional Jails, the Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run is one of a nationwide series of relay runs by law enforcement officers to increase public awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics. Several SunTrust branches will serve as water stops along the route and will be available for photo opportunities. Since 1986, the Torch Run has raised more than $8.2 million for Special Olympics Virginia, a nonprofit sports organization for children and adult athletes with intellectual disabilities.
