Originally from Coventry, CT. Boy, I was finally beginning to be proud to be from Coventry, and then this proposal was made. The open space battle is being fought all over the country, especially in New England, because it IS losing its traditional appearance and charm. Note the recent article about stone walls being stolen, or the Forest Service study Forests on the Edge. I could name more, seeing as how this topic is what I am studying for my master's research. Research studies show that a conservation design can in fact win the developer MORE MONEY, because people want to live in a conservation design where they have a large chunk of open space for trails and other recreation. People are willing to pay more for a lot in this type of design, as is evidenced by the few in my area that were snapped up and now have a low turn-over rate vs. the traditional design subdivisions with empty lots and empty houses sitting there. There is a way to reach an intelligent compromise that is good for the long-term future vision of the TOWN and its RESIDENTS while still allowing developers to take their cut and run. Thumbs up to both sides because there are valid points to each; keep it civil and think of the future.

This article fails to mention that Commissioner David Rappe is an attorney who represents Coventry developers. He stands to profit from a decision to remove the open space requirement.
