U.S. 17 Bypass task force finds Catch-22

Full story: Myrtle Beach Online

Improving U.S. 17 Bypass presents some conundrums. For example, one way to relieve traffic on the main north-south thoroughfare is to add more lanes.

It's time for a bypass to the bypass.

Bypass should be removed from the name then. Maybe call it the Hwy 17 Stop and Go Slow.

This is a fine time to figure this out. This discussion should have taken place 10 years ago when all the cookie-cutter developments and
now-empty strip malls were being built.
The infastructure should have been improved then and those that made a kililng on, or used the new development should have paid for it. But that would have taken politicians and public employees with ethics and spine, which we sorely lack.

just go ahead and start on the back gate project like you were suppose to funds already accounted for just procrastination that would relieve the flow of traffic =no lets talk about widen of the road-just focus on what should be done first THE BACK GATE PROJECT and no more red lights.

after no decision is made on this project, maybe these "fine folks" can go study 501 for a few years.
At least they'll be employed.

Catch-22? The Task Force is clueless. It has been happening for decades. The so-called "by-pass" killed a lot of Main Streets in many towns. You don't build a "by-pass" and then allow businesses to build on each side of it. Duh.

Hwy 31 and Hwy 22 are fine examples of express routes. Hwy 31 just needs to be finished so it will empty out onto Hwy 17 in Murrells Inlet.

The roads are congested because permits are issued to the developers of all these projects. Neighborhoods and shopping centers just spring up in all areas of the county. There seems to be no planning and forethought. Businesses draw even more traffic to our already heavily congested roadways, such is the case with allowing Wal-Mart to plop down anywhere they want. We will have 11, within a 50 mile radius, when the lastest two are built on business 17 in Garden City and Hwy 501 in Carolina Forest. Why were permits even issued to condone this? See, no foresight.

woo, spend 1.2 million studying how best to spend 1.2 billion on the road.

just streamline what you got, no more red lights is a start, the bypass should have been limited access back when they started it.

I have been here 20 years and remember when you could run 55 from 544 to where rest. row begins, minus 2 redlights that existed back then. we now have 31 and thats our road to run 1 end to the other, finish it off and make it meet 17 on both ends, this will require NC to let us finish it in their state, but just tying it into Murrels inlet is not enough, tie it into 701 in the Bucksport area and lets take some of that traffic off 501 at the same time.

ITS TIME SOMEONE SAT DOWN AND LOOKED AT TRANSPORTATION AS A WHOLE IN HORRY COUNTY, NOT ONE ROAD AT A TIME!

A moratorium on any additional lights would help, also make developers pay for any road requirements to access 17 by-pass. Make use of service roads to provide access at existing traffic lights.

Instead of extra lanes, build a frontage road on each side that runs the entire length. Lower and limit the number of traffic lights.

since the migration of a lot of northern people.. you would think that an interstate would be in place, considering they have lots of them up north.. and let me tell you.. they are great.. until a southerner gets on it and goes slow and causes an accident.. lol

an interstate is what we need.. hop on.. hop off..

driven in Surfside lately? frontage roads cause most of the accidents in that town.

driven on 31 and 22 lately? they are interstate style limited access roads. of course if you want a Boston style BIG DIG in downtown MB, maybe that will run off more tourists? that is the idea nowadays I believe.

DejaVu all over again. I gre up in Florida during the 60's and 70's during the beginning stages of growth like we are in today. The transplants didn't want the growth and fought on the basis that if the build the roads more will come. "So don't build the roads". The rest is history.
BUILD THE ROADS! Ready or not, here they come.

By saying that adding 2 lanes to 17 would not relieve traffic, is...well..not right. Please get some professional advice, maybe from Charlotte!

I agree 100% with James. I came from West Virginia 10 years ago and as much as people make frun of West Virginians, at least our roads were better.

Don't need new roads...Mayor Rodent and his pioneering council is going to kill the tourist indusrty and business community...All working people will move away...Blue Hairs will ride little short busses around...By then taxes will have been so unbearably high they will have come up with Toll Roads to continue to line their pockets...No Traffic Problems Ahead!

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Scorpio

Let the past stay in the past for now. Even though you may have fond memories of intense experiences, the Virgo Moon sees to it that you have virtually no desire to go there again just yet. This is your opportunity to show others what you can do in a more civilised environment. Don't try to shout down someone who is rude enough to interrupt. As unlikely as it may seem, the softest voice has the biggest chance of being heard today.
